Why did the two teams not play for 25 years between 1953 and 1978?

planes, trains, and automobiles.
It's far as hell. And there's plenty of other good teams in the area to play.
That's how the SEC rolled back in the day.

LSU probably quit like they did with A&M in the 90s.

Same reason we didn't play Tenn. from 1937 to 1968. 31 years (A 4 hour/201 mile drive)...
We've only played Tenn 43 (32 as SEC members) times 20-21-2.
We gon tie up the all time record Sat. tho....
Only played LSU 30 times...
To answer the op...I don't know. There's a lotta this in the SEC...

Yes, the SEC scheduling format prior to 1992 was crazy. Most of the older LSU fans were disappointed that they did not get to watch a game in Tiger Stadium involving Auburn(Bo Jackson) and Georgia(Herschel Walker). Actually for some reason LSU has played Kentucky and Florida a lot.

Also, this is just a funs tory from the recently deceased UGA coach and historian Dan Magill:
quote:
The first LSU game I saw was in Athens in 1935 when I was 14 years old, and it was most memorable.
The Tigers were in their heyday. They blanked Georgia, 13-0, en route to the SEC crown.
However, the Tigers lost the fight that erupted when their ROTC Cadet Corps tried to tear down Georgia's goal posts. Fortunately, Hanna Manufactoring Company in Athens had given some souvenir baseball bats to the Georgia student body, which came on the field armed with the bats and not only successfully defended their goal posts, but chased the Cadets all the way to the train station at the end of College Avenue and I was one of those brandishing my bat.
That incident is the reason behind this scoreboard which UGA featured throughout the 50s:

The SEC didn't have the same rotational scheduling that it picked up in 1992. I think UGA and UT have huge gaps in their series as well.
eta: SC and UGA have actually played more than UT-UGA and SC was an ACC / Independent for most of our history.

That scoreboard was still up during my years in Athens, was replaced for the '79 season. The pic below was the last game it was used. Buck's freshman comeback vs GT...The scoreboard after it was retired sat on the back deck behind the Loco's off Baxter for years...

The SEC had some huge gaps for several teams in that era. Kentucky and Alabama went from '48 to '72, Vandy and State hardly played even though they are two of the closer schools.Ole Miss and Alabama rarely played as did Ole Miss and Auburn. In fact from 1953 to 1972 Ole Miss and Auburn played in two bowls while playing no conference games.
Starting in 1972 the SEC established some uniformity. You had to play at least 6 SEC games and each school had 5 permanent games and with the remaining 4 you had a home and home with one until that was concluded. The SEC did this from 1972 to 1987 when a 7th conference game was added for 1988.
Now, WHY there were so many rare meetings, I do not know.

In 1968, LSU played 4 Southwest Conference schools and only 4 Southeastern Conference schools.

Thanks for explaining this.

Being 15 yrs old back in 1962 and already a college and Gator fan...its hard to describe to young folks what it was like back then. Up until the mid sixties you had Ga Tech and Tulane in the SEC and a few teams (like UF) continued to have them on their long range schedules.
UGA had natural rivals UF & AU every year and of course Ga Tech and Tech was pretty darn good back then...I know in the sixties UGA played Vandy quite a bit and rotated a few foes like Ole Miss, UK etc etc but didn't play Bama much at all (like todays UGA)or LSU. UF played LSU a lot but not Bama or Vandy in the sixties...we played AU & UGA every year up until 1992....then AU had to be eliminated and we kept LSU as west rival....UGA kept AU. UF didn't play UT much at all either back in the day.
