How would you rate UT's performance on D against OU?

They are obviously way more athletic on that side of the ball this year. Much more speed and quickness. They have done very well on 3rd down so far this year. With all that said I'm still not very impressed. OU still gashed them quite often. They still have up over 300 yards passing and 150 yards rushing. What do you think of their game plan for the OU game, and how do you think they played overall?

Defense did better than Bama's did in the Sugar Bowl.

We got gashed a few times on blown coverage (less than I would've expected with all the freshmen we played), but all in all this is the most optimistic ive been about a UT defense since I can remember. They played hard for 4 quarters against a superior team, kept us in the game til the offense took us out of it, were put in tough situations and responded well, and played with confidence and laid some BIG time hits

We are a little undersized on the d-line outside of Barnett. So you saw a lot of slants and stunts which bit us a few times on long runs.

Getting Dewayne Hendrix in there at the other d-end spot and adding McKenzie and Tuttle at tackle next year should really help. Unit should be very, very good.

AJ Johnson and Reeves-Maybin is a very nice linebacking corps. Having guys like Dillon Bates, Cortez McDowell, Elliott Berry etc. waiting in the wings there is a good as well. A lot of young talent.

I think the position we are worst at is CB and safety. Cam Sutton is damn good, but we need Todd Kelly, Jr., Evan Berry, Emmanuel Moseley, etc. to step up.

Our speed is definitely improved but we are still a year away from being a very good SEC defense. I think next year we should be very, very good.

Once the game setteled down after the 1st quarter UT's D made some big stops and forced multiple 3 and outs. In the second half OU scored 1 offensive TD and they couldn't run the ball. I feel so relieved after witnissing swiss cheese defense for a long time.

It's soo good to see this happening, Under Dooley if we got down by two scores the teams just seemed to give up.

I agree with all of that. Our DL has the potential to be a force when it gets a little older and deeper. Adding two stud DTs will help tremendously.

Definitely need someone to step up at the #2 CB next year. Hopefully Justin Martin can be a plug and play type of JUCO for us. I like Gaulden's potential there if he can stay healthy.

The speed differential between last year's D and this year's is night and day. My jaw nearly dropped when I saw VOLS defenders actually chasing down the OU skill players from behind when they got to the open field. There were two or three plays where OU got to the second level that would've probably been long touchdowns on Tennessee last year.

I'm pleasantly surprised with what Jancek has done so far with this defense.

I appreciate the responses. Any other non vol fans have an opinion on their D.

I was as well. UT is going to have one of the nastier defenses in the SEC in a year or two. I watched the OU game and thought Vol D played well enough to keep this game close in the 4th qtr, if only they had a 2 or 3 breaks go their way instead of OU's way. AJ is a beast and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe UT loses him next year. There's another LB they have that impressed me, can't think of his name #34 I think is a beast in the making. He was all over the field and the Sutton dude is another one they got that goes hard and brings the boom. I think UT is in good shape as far as their defense goes. I am expecting a hard hitting, close game when Saban and his boy Kiffin rolls into Knoxville.

#34 is sophomore Jalen Reeves-Maybin. He's probably my second favorite on this defense behind Sutton. JRM is the guy that had the big blocked punt last year vs UGA.

Losing AJ after this year will suck but thankfully our LB unit is young and full of potential behind him. Dillon Bates is one to keep an eye on.

And I'm really looking forward to watching Sutton matchup with Cooper. That's gonna be a dogfight between a couple of beasts.

Cam is starting to look more and more like Eric Berry.

He's easily the best DB we've had since Berry and I don't think it's close. I can't believe teams still throw screens to his side of the field because he blows them up badly. Every. Single. Time.

That WR was shaky getting up. It was a bone jarring kinda hit.
