My concern isn't really about present day. Coach Pinkel has proven himself imo with his recruiting philosophy. Although I wouldn't mind still getting in more top recruits.

I'm not trying to knock the talent we have either, and I also understand the rating system used by recruiting sites is often flawed. But top talent is top talent.

My concern is the future. What happens when Coach decides to hang it up? We need to improve our options. Improve the amount of talent we are able to bring in.

It's going to be tough to recruit with Bama, Auburn, Lsu, A&M, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee on a consistent basis.
My goal is to be a consistent 8th or 9th best recruiting team in the SEC and on good years 5th - 7th.

I don't think that is unrealistic.

haha, that is the most likely answer but I don't see why not.

No reason we can't out recruit Arkansas, the Mississippi schools, Vandy, Kentucky and SCAR.

Depends on the coach. We'll never recruit like Bama or LSU. But some coaches buy into "rankings" more than others. Pinkel has his system and knows what he's looking for which seems to work, and it does not involve recruiting "top" talent. However, other coaches like Freeze are recruiters who go out with the goal of signing as much "top" talent as they can.

I posted an articleover in the recruiting thread that mentions how teams in non-hotbed areas (including Missouri) recruit to win - and Pinkel's followed it to a tee.

One would think they only have to increase their talent level marginally to close the gap in talent level between the XII and SEC.

No, and i'm not sure it would be a definite improvement for the program.

Yes, we need to get SOME high level talent but too much could be negative for us. Our system is exactly that. It is a system. We develop guys who know exactly what they are doing by juniors and seniors along with improved S&C. Less heralded recruits, IMO, seem to be better at putting in all that work for future gain where as the higher rated kids expect to play right away and become problems if they dont or transfer.

I think this is the best philosophy for Mizzou to have. I'm not sure any coach would have long term success by recruiting elite recruits even if they were able to do that at Mizzou.

I don't think MU will ever be able to recruit with the big boys for the top flight(rated) national recruits... I've thought about what happens when Pinkel and his system retire as well, but, I'll wait to worry about it until it happens... right now.. I'm just trying to enjoy what we have going on..

When Pinkel retires things will get interesting, because he has built Mizzou into a profile program, plus the move to the SEC may attract some high level candidates to replace him.

If we hire a coordinator form Bama, LSU or UGA then 4,5 star recruiting will be the focus. If we hire from within then I think we continue recruiting the Mizzou way.

We should learn from our mistakes and hire someone familiar with the system and capable continuing it.

It will take a few more years of success and tons more alumni dollars. Don't forget the role boosters play in those elite programs. Ole Miss isnt that great but always recruit well. I'm not inferring they do illegal things at Ole Miss(or am I?) but top notch facilities make a huge difference on recruiting visits.
Mizzou still has a lot of room to grow in STL and KC. When the Rams go back to LA it will help a lot.

If we stay competitive in the SEC I could see us getting to top 15/20 every year. With demographics, it will be tough to do better than that unless we start pulling a bunch out of B1G territory.

uestion, does anyone know how our facilities stack up against other top 25 schools? Obviously bama, Texas Norte Dame etc. are top dawgs, but are we on the low end, in the middle etc?

Your premise is flawed...

I would dare you to go into the training complex and ask them if MU will ever recruit top talent. I imagine that quite a few of those players/coaches would take exception. Additionally, all the NFL players MU has produced lately might beg to differ about their talent level as well.

What you want to know is if MU will ever recruit kids that ratings services say are good...

I'd guess we are low middle for the SEC which probably translates to top 30ish for the nation.

If I am talking replying to a specific thing (such as this) I try to take the time to go back and quote the person.

In this case, I just hit reply on whatever the last post of the thread is. My reply was directed at the OP or the thread in general. You are correct that it was not directed at you specifically. You just happened to be the last reply before I posted.
