FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas offensive coordinator Jim Chaney relived his harrowing tale of being trapped in an elevator at halftime of the 45-21 loss to Auburn.

OK, it wasn’t quite that bad.

Chaney and the rest of the Arkansas coaches working the game from the box did get stuck in the elevator at Auburn as they tried to make their way down to the locker room at halftime. It wasn’t long — about five minutes — but it was more than enough to throw off the halftime routine. Still, Chaney said he’s been in the business long enough to realize “you control the things you can control.” So he didn’t think it was a big deal in the end.

“It had zero to do with how we played in the outcome of that ballgame,” Chaney said. “So that’s a dead issue in my mind.”

But since Chaney typically has a humorous take on things, it was good to get his story Sunday.

Here are some highlights:

Chaney on the elevator’s problem: “I don’t know. I’m not an elevator man, but I was stuck in it. That’s always a lot of fun. I couldn’t tell you what the problem was.”

Chaney on what happened: “Well, we got in, the elevator started coming down and it stopped. And we just sat there awhile. Hung out. Played some cards and then went on to the second half. That’s kind of the way it went down. It wasn’t that big a deal when we finally got out. I got to be able to communicate with the coaches down at halftime in the locker room.”

Chaney on if he was worried they’d be stuck awhile: “Well have you ever been stuck in one? It goes through your mind, sure. How long am I going to be in this thing? There’s no question about that.”

Chaney on what happened when it started working: “We got back out of it and went around and went back up another one because we were so far into (halftime) we couldn’t make it down to the locker room. So we just went back up on another elevator. They wanted to say, ‘We got this one fixed.’ I said, ‘No, we’ll go on a different one.’”

Chaney on if he considered going to the locker room: “You’ve got to run through the stands at Auburn and across the field. And for me to go 50 yards is probably about seven minutes. So I figured, to hell with it, I ain’t going to make it"
