Why was last year a down year for Alabama?

The 2013 Alabama football team just didn't play as well as some of their former teams. For personal reasons I'm hoping this is the beginning of the end of bama's SEC dominance. However something tells me they won't be down long and last year was just a fluke.

So can any one factor be attributed to them having a down year or is it multiple factors?

Complacency is hard to avoid. I blame it on coaching. Came up against one hungry, motivated rival and pure talent wasn't enough. Don't expect anything amazing from them this year either.

lack of chemistry, team full of players who never had a meaningful loss, least experienced secondary since saban got there, really predictable playcalling on O and an inability to adjust to what was happening in the game.

Not attributed to this troll thread but do you think this is a very important year for Saban?

With all the "discussions" lately about bama having the best players due to the unreal job of recruiting he has done over the past few years and him being regarded as the best coach in football...

You have to think he can not have many "off" years. The bar has been set pretty high. If we go into T-Town and win again along with a good season and us or LSU go to the SEC Championship game, will it start the Saban doubting?

For me it would not but you have to think some of the bama fan base would start to rumble

Down year? They got beat by a really good team in Auburn.

They didn't show up and embarrassed themselves against OU, but that was the postseason.

Not sure it was a down year

I actually think that Saban has lost some of his edge. He doesn't seem as firey as he used to. I thought that he might reignite this year, but after the comment about the consulation Sugar Bowl, I am thinking maybe not. In the past he would have blasted a player that suggested that the team considered any game a consulation game, much less the Sugar Bowl after a bad loss. He would have attacked it as an opportunity and a redemption game.

Out of all of Saban's "good years", this could be considered a bad one yes. Even when our 2008 lost their last 2 games, they weren't expected to do great so that wasn't necessarily THAT bad. The 2010 team beat he dog shite out of MSU in the bowl game so it was bittersweet. This year just ended terribly after a mildly good and very stale regular season.

So yeah, frick this past year. We're going in dry this year.

When you lose your soul like Saban and Bama have, you start having down years. Success, corruption take hold. Then the program gradually declines as people realize Saban is losing the razor's edge. And he just holds on until it's pathetic like Bobby Bowden.
