When Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason met with the media Friday, his first official media day as the Bulldogs starter, he did so wearing a No. 43 pin.

The pin, which Mason said he plans to wear a lot this season, bears the Auburn jersey number of his good friend Philip Lutzenkirchen, who was killed in a single-car accident in late June.

Misleading, he isn't wearing the jersey number, he is wearing a pin.

Great gesture and Mason has the right to honor his friend however he wants but the topic is misleading.

Misleading topic is misleading.

They both attended Lassiter High School in Marietta GA... not sure if they knew each other though.

They did. Played together at least one year, I believe.

Mason and Lutzenkirchen had been friends since they were 7 years old. They played high school football and baseball together, and though Lutzenkirchen decided to play at Auburn while Mason went to Georgia, the two kept in touch regularly.

That's not Hutson. That's Reed Handler.

Mason was the QB and number 6 in 2008 for lassiter, so you are saying the number 6 QB from Lassiter in 2008 is not mason?

Nice, will pull for this kid to be successful. Loved UGA growing up. Hope we go back to the old ways.

Reed Handler was the kid Phillip batted the ball to, Mason was the QB...

quote:

On fourth-and-7 from the 12-yard line in a game against Centennial, then-Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey elected to go for it. Mason threw a pass toward Lutzenkirchen in the back of the end zone, but the ball began tailing out of bounds.

The 6-foot-5 Lutzenkirchen used his height to his advantage, leaping in the air and batting the ball with his left hand to teammate Reid Handler, who brought it in for a touchdown — and an appearance among the top 10 plays on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” that week.
