Long before the state of Arkansas received its name, neighboring tribes referred to the local Quapaw as the "people of the southern place" or "Acansa" in the Siouan tongue

This new festival will make LR/NLR as the next great arts and culture city in the United States.

This is not going to be your typical Arts festival that you all are used to up there in NWA. There will not be Yakov, from Branson performing, nor will PePe Aguilar or Tim McGraw be there. Also, don't expect to come down here and see all of the crappy crap from the War Eagle festival in Rogers or all of that wooden shite that those Hillbillies from Mt.View sit around all day making.

We will not be breaking out in a Hog Call and Razorback foam fingers will not be sold. Come to think about it, why do they sell a #1 Razorback foam finger? Think about that one.

This is about educating you. Do you even Fine Arts, bro?

Video: What is ACANSA, good watch

The ACANSA Arts Festival will inspire public appreciation for the arts and enrich the economic and cultural vitality of Central Arkansas. The festival promotes positive collaboration between regional arts organizations, local businesses, government, and civic groups. We are committed to increasing audience participation in the arts and generating opportunities for local commerce. ACANSA will broaden public access to the arts, provide educational opportunities, and encourage and cultivate emerging artistic talent and local artists and art groups.

ACANSA Arts Festival brings together people and resources to present unique and exciting visual and performing works which celebrate the unique influence of the south and champion excellence and innovation in artistry. Showcasing works of the highest artistic caliber by both established and emerging artists, ACANSA's emphasis is to nurture talent by providing unique performance opportunities which are publicly accessible across a wide range of venues.
ACANSA Arts Festival will:

COLLABORATE with major art entities, regional city, county and state governments as well as area businesses and schools to present visual and performing works which champion excellence and innovation in artistry.

ENLIGHTEN area residents to expand awareness of and participation in the arts by inviting cutting edge visual and performing arts from around the US to participate.

HIGHLIGHT local emerging and established visual and performing artists and nurture their talent by providing unique performance opportunities which are publicly accessible across a wide range of venues.

EDUCATE underserved audiences through exposure to artist workshops and master classes as well as access to affordable performances.

IMPACT economic development in a positive way by generating opportunities for local commerce in Little Rock, North Little Rock and throughout Central Arkansas.

ACANSA Arts Festival premiers September 24-28, 2014 with multiple venues throughout Central Arkansas.

I don't think they are shooting any films during the festival.

I used to think of John Daly, Mark Martin, and Billy Bob Thornton when I thought about Arkansas. But after reading this board, I now think about hipster yuppies at an art festival drinking snooty craft beers and wearing those feet shoes with the toes on them.....

What the hell is happening to Arkansas?

In Cherokee, Acansa translates into "try too hard".

The only way to improve it is to move it to NWA.

Every time I see 'NWA', I think of that old rap group.

Maybe some day this can replace the Little Rock Nine as the one thing anyone knows about our pitiful capital.

Eta: ACANSA reminds me of that lame as hell "Do you Kasasa?" marketing campaign

It plans to take that title from Bentonville? LR's got quite an uphill battle on its hands. $1 billion facility + God only how much art...

Had a great time in the Rock last night, went bar hopping with my dad downtown. We hit Flying Saucer first, then Big Whiskey and finally went to Dugan's. The River Market is a really fun place on a Saturday night. Even had saxophone players on the sidewalk.

Can't even start a thread about a LR event without referencing or trying to denigrate NWA. For the record, it sounds great, and I hear about good stuff happening in LR. NWA has its own month-long Artosphere festival along with all of the other local annual events, fyi.

This is what I don't understand about a small segment of LR Arkansas fan-folks. The way you started this thread reminds me of how the kids who went to stAte would act about all things Jonesboro---always comparing it to something in Fayetteville. Meanwhile, the kids at U of A rarely ever thought of Jonesboro and certainly wouldn't compare anything about Fayetteville to Jonesboro.

What is it about NWA's success that bothers some of you yokelier types? I haven't visited LR since 2006, but plan to this fall (and not even for a football game, but just to visit and hang out). I guarantee I won't be comparing it to NWA the whole time I'm there, but will just enjoy what LR has to offer on its own merits.

Obviously all LR folks aren't like that, but there seems to be a strong contingent among the Hogvillier types of fans in the Razorback fansbase, like Pigfeet and WWH. There's some weird type of shitty insecurity there among you guys. Kinda gross.

Just didn't want any of the NWA folks be shocked if they decided to take in one of the many prestigious shows and get cultured.

Don't be so insecure. You don't hear me or other great LR patrons whining when someone tries to bash the Capital of Arkansas. I smile and engage in the conversation. If I feel like joining the conversation, I will. If I don't, then I ignore it.

It works, it really does. Should try, young fella.

Once again, proving my point. Thanks.

When posters here talk about what's going on in Fayetteville or NWA, you won't ever see them comparing it to Little Rock. We're just talking about that bar we used to go to or what they're building in that old neighborhood we used to frequent.
