Psychology of QB Competitions

Many QB battles in the past show deeply conflicting opinions about the competing players.
In fact, it seems in many cases the preferred QB is often told he's not up to form or the other QB looks like a better fit. We hear this even when popular opinion about the talent says otherwise.
Is this just football lore or does this actually happen? Meaning, do coaches really play the game of minds like this with the players?
McCarron and Sims come to mind.
Coker and Sims or Bateman this year.
Other QB competitions from other squads?

Probably serves as motivation for them to work harder. Same thing is going on with Hoyer and JFF in CLE.
LSU is having a similar issue - our assumed starter has 1 start under his belt and a game winning drive, but everyone and their dog want BHarris to start under center. I think it serves as more motivation for them to be told they are second tier or "aren't ready"

So you think coaches actually do this or the public has created this narrative?

I think coaches DGAF. 99 out of 100 times they're going to start the guy that they feel gives them the best chance to win. That doesn't always equate to the most talented guy but it normally does.
Fans like to second guess. It's our nature.

We have a hell of a good qb competition for our backup. Kincade and buchannon are both very talented but different styles. Could honestly see either of them starting next season. Hopefully the other doesnt transfer out because both will see significwnt pt in our offense

Saban will play the guy who turns the ball over the least and makes the best decisions with the football.

Yeah, this shite is gonna get real at Auburn in 2015. Lots of Auburn folks will be rooting for Sean White right out of the box. Unless we sign one of the hot stuff kids like Gibson or Francois.

I can't imagine most won't be rooting for JJ.

It probably depends on the player. Some need encouragement, some play better with a chip on their shoulder.

I don't know but I think it did our young padwan good to watch Franklin, while he was learning to control the force:

That's as many highlight moments in 4 games as most had in an entire season.

UK has a 3-way competition right now featuring two former 4-star recruits.
Patrick Towles looks to have the advantage heading into camp. We'll see who ends up winning it.

2012 Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett battled for a bit before JD got the nod at A&M. Brisset ended up transferring to NCSU after the SugarBowl
