I was looking the other day and those 4 seasons were the worst 4 seasons of Bryant's career (along with his last season which was an 8-4 season).

I was wondering what happened during those years - does anyone know? The three years prior and the five years after include conference championships all 8 years and national titles 3 of the 8 years.

Other teams "caught up" to him. He made changes (like switch to the Wishbone) and went on his second big run at Alabama. Integration was also a factor.

There was some discord, when Hunter was QB. He was a douce. The SEC was pretty equal also.

A major recruiting tactic coaches took against Bryant in the mid-60s was convincing talented high school athletes that they would never see the field at Alabama due to a large proportion of talented college athletes present on the roster.

Bryant also seemed to get away from his offensive philosophy which was all about ball control. In the late-60s there was a talented QB named Scott Hunter playing at Alabama and he was a skilled drop back passer. Bryant kind of revolved his offense around this scheme and it really ended up biting him in the butt in the end.

Also...the game of football itself was changing. Bryant had been recruiting smaller and faster players for years, believing that speed would conquer size. For many years he was right. But athletes started evolving. It turns out big players could have speed as well. So his small, undersized lines began getting torn apart by bigger and faster players.

Bryant eventually corrected his errors starting with the 1971 season and the rest, as they say, is history.
