Being an Alabama graduate/fan puts you in a weird position. On the one hand you have to be associated with the most embarrassing fringe element of a fanbase in sports. On the other hand, you come as an elitist jerk if you don't want to be associated with that part of the fanbase or you criticize this portion of the fanbase. One of the few unfortunate burdens of being a fan of such an iconic program.

Its elitist and wrong. Yes, Alabama has poor fans who can be tacky. So does every major program. How do you tell someone they cannot be a fan of a school?

If you put your infant child in danger because you chose to sprint across the field in 100 degree heat at Fan Day just to get another autograph from Saban, it should be pretty easy to be told to find another team. Its not about the team for them, its about fulfilling some redneck fantasy.
The sidewalk Gumps are terrible and they have no problem embarrassing the program.

They certainly have every right to be a fan but I wish some of the more obsessed ones had a little self awareness of how ridiculous they act. Carrying week old infants to autograph signings and screaming on the radio like Phyllis or Charles from Reeltown should be embarrassing to anyone and I don't think it's elitist to call out anyone for such irresponsible behavior.
I have friends that are die hard Bama fans that didn't go to Bama. One went to Vandy undergrad and got his MBA at Virginia and the other graduated from Rhodes College so "sidewalk" Bama fans come from all walks of life. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the crazies come from sidewalk fans that didn't go to college. They have every right to be a fan and most are fine. I just wish the nutty fringe fans had a little more self awareness about how embarrassing their behavior is and considered how stupid they look. That's all.
