Is that the same thing as saying "the SEC is won and lost in the trenches?"

We've been saying that for decades, right?

He went on to say, "not only is this a line of scrimmage league, but you'd better have depth on both lines, particularly on the defensive line."

Sumlin gets it. He'll go far. Texas (UTw) is fricked.

Looking forward to decades of battles on the gridiron with A&M. Glad they are our permanent opponent from the West. There is is real potential there.

Does Texas produce a lot of big time DLinemen?

The state of SC is known for producing DLinemen, but I admit to not knowing much about Texas in that regard.

I can only imagine that UTw is feeling very threatened right now.

I thought Spurrier threw A&M a bone chastizing the horns for not playing A&M.

Would A&M immediately agree to play UTw again if UTw quit acting like a bunch of pussies?

The state doesn't produce a great amount of DLine Talent, compared to other positions, but we will get the top dlineman by default and recruit LA HEAVILY, as usual.

There is absolutely NOTHING in it for A&M. We have already surpassed them in recruiting, we pick up a better Thanksgiving Day game with LSU.

Although part of me says I wouldnt mind whooping that arse a few times, but there is no reason for us to do so.

Myles Garrett is better than Jadaveon Clowney, FWIW.

Sumlin learned this the hard way last year watching his defensive line get shoved around by Rice and Sam Houston State.

You should te Sumlin.

He's about to go speedy on the defensive front talent in LA in the future classes. Les will be lucky to get his 3rd choices in state after Bama and AU come through behind A&M.

No, but maybe in a few years we can trade a D-lineman or two for a Heisman-level QB.

Our leadership is mixed on this. Luckily this is not a real concern until the Longhorn AD is replaced or has his hand forced.

He is correct and pretty much describes why UGA has not won a NC under Richt; has not recruited well enough on the OL in particular.

Texas doesn't produce DL the way it does some other positions, like QB, WR etc. But while the volume of DL stars is comparatively lower, the state is just so big that there are always good group of players, including some national caliber studs (A'Shawn Robinson in 2013, Myles Garrett in 2014, Daylon Mack in 2015). If we can stay top dog recruiting-wise in Texas, we should be ok.

I agree that I'm glad USC is our opponent in the East. I've always been a Spurrier fan, both because he's an amazing coach, and it's just fun having him as the "enemy".

As for playing UTx again, if they publicly expressed their desire to play again, I think we would. But that ain't happening for at least a few years.

Good stuff, scrooster.

Sounds like that's exactly what he's saying.
And it's the reason that, until our DL starts manhandling our opponents in the same manner as does our OL, we're going to lose some big games.
I agree--Sumlin gets it.
And I'm glad he's our guy.

I wouldn't have chosen a different cross-division perma-rival, if I could have.

The Ags and Horns will not be facing each other on the gridiron (bowl games aside) any time soon.

I think this may be short-sighted thinking. In 5 years, Texas may be back on top in the state, and A&M may benefit from this game, and being able to beat the big dog in state. I'm not guaranteeing that, but conventional wisdom makes me think Texas will be doing good things in 2-3 years

Agreed. It should work out great for South Carolina too. The program will be able to recruit in Texas and the state will have Texas oil money spill across its golf courses.

I would have picked UF, but I swear USCe was # 2... ish.

What pisses them off to no end is that they have no control over the media outside of Texas. If they try to get al.com, nola.com, ajc, etc. to come on board with any scheme to "investigate" A&M, they can just tell them to frick off without any consequences.

Conventional wisdom makes me think that, as long as the SEC has a foothold in the Brazos Valley, Texas will NEVER again enjoy the recruiting success they had from 1998-2011.

A&M isn't competing with Texas anymore on the recruiting front. They're competing with Alabama and LSU.

The only way I agree with your argument is if the Big 12 magically turns into a playoff conveyor belt for them. If that happens, then yes I want to play them to be a speed bump.

But the more likely situation, thanks to the Big 12's round-robin format, is that the conference will not have many one-loss or undefeated teams which will mean few playoff trips.

We already play some of the nation's top teams (e.g., LSU, Alabama, South Carolina).
Beating those guys is meaningful.

Ags and Longhorns grow up in the exact same places (often in the same homes)--both are well aware of the other.
Exposure to/knowledge of the other will never be an issue in Texas.
