I think this may be short-sighted thinking. In 5 years, Texas may be back on top in the state, and A&M may benefit from this game, and being able to beat the big dog in state. I'm not guaranteeing that, but conventional wisdom makes me think Texas will be doing good things in 2-3 years
The big pitch A&M has over UTx is that we play in the NFL-lite. We don't compare ourselves to UTx, we challenge ourselves against the SEC, which every year sends more players to the pros than any other.
From a strictly strategic standpoint, it would do more to legitimize UTx than to help us if we were to play them.
We'll see how they do, but if we're winning in the SEC, then it doesn't matter what the horns do in the B12.

Exposure to/knowledge of the other will never be an issue in Texas.
Exactly.
The flip side is that us playing them allows them access to our substantial SEC exposure, which they kinda need as they threw away all that brand momentum from 2005 into the black hole they call the LHN.
Also by playing us that gives their schedule a little boost (which might help them in the playoff hunt), but it REALLY gives their home schedule a boost. That is their biggest problem right now- their big game is in Dallas annually and the rest of the conference is considered shite nationally. Eventually the casual fans aren't going to pay big bucks for Iowa St. and Kansas at home, especially when LSU, Bama and Auburn are right down the road.

Wow ... did any of y'all watch the Interview with Kayce Smith of TexAgs.com? She was very good. In particular I liked:
Q: How does A&M going to the SEC change the battle between Texas and A&M?
Smith (who I'd smash btw), "The move to the SEC .. Sumlin, Manziel, it was the perfect storm for A&M. The national exposure not only put A&M on the map, but it changed the way people perceive A&M and you see people like Drake repping A&M and the kids wanna see that. That's what recruits wanna see. I think that the perception is that A&M is now the 'it' program in the state of Texas. Right now A&M is on top and rightnow Texas has fallen ... especially on the recruiting trail."

Uh oh Sumlin's going all Muschamp. That was his quote in his first Media day.

Rooster, that couldn't be more true.
When she said "growing up, A&M wasn't "cool"" that was the other "head on the nail" comment.
tu was cool, no doubt. But it took Mack how many years to win a conf championship? It will take Sumlin a few years (possibly 2016&2017) to win a championship, but he will. The fact that A&M is getting 1st choice, makes all the difference in the world.
I really think the only thing tu can do to reverse this is to win big, now, before A&M does, or join the SEC.

Yeah, I heard that when she was talking about her Dad being a former Aggie cadet.
She did well ... and she laid the wood to UTw no doubt.

We can play Texas or not, as long as it isn't on TDay weekend. I don't care about hurting/helping them I only care about how it affects us. There are benefits to the game for us but we don't need it either. If/when the game does come back though it will be very different and less of a gamechanger than most people realize if it is early in the year. It won't affect conference races and realistically it won't have a big impact on the Playoff compared to how both teams play out their seasons, it would be more like an exhibition. It's still a long way of either way.
As to the OP, Sumlin is speaking to guys like Mack and making sure that DL recruits know how important they are to him. He doesn't have to sell QB/WR/OL to come to A&M but he is still trying to lock up more and more defensive talent because he knows that is the key to trophies.
Texas does produce some quality DL every year but only a handful, he has to clean up on it (which he is) and get some OOS guys on occasion. Mainly he needs a few of these highly recruited defensive players to make it to the league so he can point to them.

Myles Garrett is better than Jadaveon Clowney, FWIW.
I know that's troll bait but seriously ... how long we gonna have to hear that over and over again from everybody who signs the next JD Clowney?
I remember when everyone was claiming to sign the next Jevon "The Freak" Kearse. Or the next Peyton Manning or the next Shaun Ellis.
Those players are once a decade or once a lifetime players at their positions.
When we going to start hearing so-and-so is the next JFF? And how hard will A&M fans laugh when they read that?

If you think she laid the wood there, you should see her posts on TexAgs! She can rag with the best of em.

You already are. Kyler Murray.
Obviously he's not JFF but his height, arm strength, mobility, and host of uncoachable attributes already have many people calling him the next JFF.
He is the QB commit for our 2015 class, and #1 rated DT QB in the country.

Is it really? Or do you just want there to be because a USCe fan brought them up?
You should really see their boards. If OU is the "real" rival, you wouldn't know it by the amount of talk of A&M.

I've got family in Texas. Half, the ones down around El Paso are A&M fans and the ones in Katy are Longhorn fans.
The way I read them right now is that the Texas fans are upset, hating on A&M, but just trying to ignore and deny what is happening.
I used to always have disputes with both sides about whether or not the SEC was better than the SWC or Big 12 ... not so much anymore with regard to my A&M family. And now my Longhorn family is more anti-SEC than ever.

The Big 12 "PRIDE" was established the day A&M left for the SEC. No doubt, we were the sole cause of said "PRIDE".
The only good thing to happen to tu in the last few years was their win over OM (Thanks alot, idiots).
The fact that they lost to OM in 2013 and us beating OM in 13, seems to have flown right over their memory.

Looking for the next Steve Spurrier? Look right at Kevin Sumlin and smile
(not an insult to Spurrier; it's a compliment)

Settle down, rooster, I didn't know putting the "e" in there was disrespectful.
Cool?
