Is it me or are 3 stars over-represented on our Oline?

Seems like we have had more than our fair share of 3 star guys starting in the saban years. caldwell, Vlachos, chapman, steen, warmack, and now kelly, brown, and sheppard, and i think im maybe missing someone. 4 star guys that started include jones, arie K, james carpenter, and then 5 stars like smith, fluker, cyrus K, and now cam rob. seems like we have had more 3 star guys than 4 and 5 star combined, which is not the surprising except that weve had so many stellar recruiting classes in that time. is this just an indication that oline is the hardest to project out of HS, or is it that guards and centers are under ranked by the services?

recruiting rankings are more about probabilities than prowess.

There are way, WAY more 3 star guys than 5 star guys. Hell if Alabama got every 5 star offensive linemen each year I'm not sure they would have enough guys to get through a season.

It's due to the difference in how recruiting services rate different positions. For example, last year there 52 WRs that were 4* or above compared to only 14 OGs

looked back through all the oline we recruited since saban got here starting with 2007

5 star
Tyler Love 2008 bust
DJ Fluker 2009 mult-year starter
Cyrus Koundjio 2011 multi-year starter
Cam Robinson 2014 * looks to be starter as TF

4 star
John Michale Boswell 2008
Barrett Jones 2008 one of the best ever
James Carpenter 2009 mult-year started
Brandon Moore 2009 cant remember him contributing
Arie Koundjio 2010 starter at least 1 year, not great
Aaron Douglas 2011 died
Brandon Greene 2012 backup so far
Grant Hill 2013 backup so far
Josh Casher 2014 *
JC Hasselhoff 2014 *
Dominick Jackson 2014 *
Montel McBride 2014 *
Ross Piersblacher 2014 *

3 star
Patrick Crump 2007 who?
William Vlachos 2007 multi-year started/battle dwarf
Darius McKeller 2009 who?
Anthony Steen 2009 multi-year starter
Chance Warmack 2009 multi-year starter
Kellen Williams 2009 useful backup/6th man
Chad Lindsey 2010 some thought should start, transferred
Austin Sheppard 2010 multi-year starter (looks like)
Ryan Kelly 2011 multi-year starter
Isaac Luatua 2011 hasnt done anything yet
Caleb Gulledge 2012 Gone
Brandon Hill 2012 and 2013 Gone
Leon Brown 2013 Started some games last year, may be a starter this year
Bradley Bozeman 2013 backup so far

So not counting 2014 recruits who didnt go through spring (only counting Cam Rob because he looks like the starter), we have taken 4 5-star, 8 4-star, and 14 3-star OL (13 4-star if you count 2014 recruits who havent gone through fall camp yet). so roughly as many 3 star as 4 star and 5 star together.

of the 5-star 3 of 4 are starters, 75%
of the 4-star 3 of 8 are starters, 37%
of the 3-star 6 of 14 are starters, 43%

so our 5 stars pan out mostly, and out 3 stars pan out at a slightly higher clip than our 4 stars up to this point. thats going to change when all the 2014 OL start contributing. we took 6 OL in 14,all of which are 4 star or above. looking though this, we really rode the 2009 OL class to a lot of success. Im hoping the 2014 class is the same way

It's incredible to think that we have signed 17 4&5 star oline in eight years, with just under 1/3 of that total coming from last year's class alone. (Was McBride really a 4 star?)

Cristobal is a phenomenal recruiter. Whether or not he can coach his way out of a paper bag remains to be seen, but he is second to none in recruiting.

he was on rivals, which i used for convenience. the numbers stay pretty much the same overall if you use 247, because they had leon brown a 4 star and mcbride a 3 star

I hope I'm wrong but I think the OL is what keeps us from winning another championship this year.

Definitely my biggest concern. If one of the starters isn't cutting it, I hope the coaches won't hesitate to plug in Grant Hill or one of the freshmen. Obviously there's something to be said for experience, but sometimes an injection of new blood is exactly what's needed.
