Is it illegal or is it just frowned upon?

Depending on state and local ordinances possibly. Not that it's a flag or anything, just that you're burning something

No. The Supreme Court has said that it is protected by the First Amendment.

Freedom of expression.

Only questionable action is burning something in a residential area.

Depends.....are you playing Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" backwards while you do it? If so, death penalty.

When hunger strikes are fashion
And freedom is routine
All the streets in Cleveland are named for Martin Luther King
You will see me at the protest
But you'll notice that i drag
I burn my father's flag
