How does the World Cup actually work?

How is all the back door advancement possible? How does this so-called chess match tourney structure work? How can a team keep losing or playing to a tie and still advance?

What do they mean when they say, "Division of Death?"

4 teams in each group in the opening round. Round robin format within each group. Wins get 3 points, ties 1 point, and losses no points. Most points after 3 games advances. Goal differential is the primary tie breaker.

Losing will not get you advanced, playing to ties can.

You are in a group of four. You play the other three teams.

3 pts for a win
1 pt for a tie
0 for a loss

Top two in points advance. If there's a tie, it goes to goal differential. Next is head to head. Next I believe is goals scored. If all else fails, they draw lots. Not even joking.

Americans would have lost it if we got knocked out on essentially a coin flip.

Scrooster it's based on points and goal differential. In our division, with Ghana, Portugal and Germany, we won 1, lost 1 and tied 1. So did Portigal. But portugal's loss was by more points than our loss. We both lost to Germany, but they lost by more goals. So, when they take the top 2 from each division, we were in based on that goal differential.

I think the division of death thing was that our division was really hard. We weren't expected to advance, and there wouldn't have even much surprise if we lost every game to those 3 teams. We've already exceeded the expectations of a lot of people by managing to advance.

It's a big part of what makes the group stage so exciting. I don't expect you to understand.

Once you get out of the group stage, it's a 16 team, single elimination bracket with no ties. The U.S. will play Belgium. In the last World Cup, Ghana eliminated the U.S. in this round.

Group stage is the most exciting part of the game, honestly, I love the calculus.

No one cares that I don't like cycling. No one cares that you don't like soccer. Neither sport is stupid because of how we feel about them. Check your ego, the group round is awesome because of it's scoring format.

How's Wimbledon going? Does anyone take days off just to watch Tennis?

Maybe you and a couple of other dudes who like to watch people jog while grunting?

Liking a sport is subjective you daft bastard, there are plenty of reasons to like Soccer just as there are other sports. Now stop trying so hard.
