According to Parrish, Buzz Williams and those close to him had made it clear to Tennessee higher ups towards the end of the season that that was the job he wanted if it came open. Tennessee was well aware of his interest and Buzz is "likely the Tennessee coach today" if UT hadn't gotten hot down the stretch and snuck in to the tourney.

When it became clear that Martin wouldn't be fired, Williams turned his attention elsewhere in his search to get out of Marquette and ended up at Virginia Tech.

Apparently this is from Gary Parrish on CBS Sports Radio this evening.

We likely would have been far better off if we had missed the tourney and hired Buzz. Strange how everything works out though, as Cuonzo is now a candidate to replace Buzz at Marquette.

Tennessee needs to stay away from Buzzes. The last one you had was a disaster.

Great Peterson story.

VOLS get the living hell beat out of them at home by Vandy in his 4th year. Postgame a reporter asks how concerning the performance was. His answer? "Well shoot, it's just one game, right?"

What makes you think that?

Buzz has been desperate to find a new job for years as he couldn't meet the expectations at Marquette, they didn't make any post season tournament, and he took the next job to avoid being fired from the last strategy.

Why did Tennessee fire Jerry Green? Yall were pretty solid under him.

Pretty much inherited a great situation and just coasted. Horrendous coach.

Here is a summary of the era. LINK

quote:

when the Vols struggled and played lazy, nonexistent defense with seemingly no instruction to do otherwise from the bench, the fans got very frustrated and very vocal. The university paid for orange t-shirts for all the students for the three game home stretch that said "NOT IN OUR HOUSE!", in reference to the aforementioned undefeated streak at home. And I think mine is still in a trash can somewhere in Thompson-Boling.

How did Jerry Green respond to all this newfound criticism and poor play from his team? He went on the radio and said if Tennessee fans didn't like it, they could go to K-Mart instead.

This sums it up though.

That doesn't say much with the way your fan base went full retard over the Kiffin and Jones hires.

Not a good judge of coaches, also wanted Dooley and Martin fired before they had a chance to turn things around.

If you are going for the shock factor, you are going to try harder than that...

What exactly did he have to turn around?

Wasn't going for shock factor, I genuinely want that to happen.

A program who had to fire their coach due to NCAA sanctions.

Now that he has a sweet16 under his belt he is "OK" to most of your fanbase.

Tennessee doesn't deserve good head coaches, their fanbase and/or administration has mistreated every decent HC they have ever had.

I'm glad you are the authority on what Tennessee fans "deserve". Lol at Arkansas sports.

I'm still not sure why he wanted to get out of Marquette so badly, but Buzz was definitely not on the hot seat at Marquette.

He had generally outperformed all of the guys who came before him.

Interim AD and Interim president. Wasn't a fan of the new conference. I heard Parrish bring his name up on the radio for someone he thought would move after the season. I didn't believe him at the time because I thought the same thing about why would he leave.

I think he went to 3 or 4 straight sweet 16's before this year.

Buzz isn't that great of a coach, he coached one season at New Orleans and went below .500, then he took over a loaded Marquette roster and won with Creans players. This year he was horrible at Marquette.
