Thread not locked but getting stop sign trying to post in it

the thread doesnt have a padlock icon on it like it is locked or anything but I keep getting the red stop sign of death. Dont really care that much about the thread itself, was just more curious what happened? Do we have phantom locked threads now?
ETA: ok, so it wasnt that I couldnt post in the thread, it was because I put some text in alligator brackets, like html tags are wrapped in. I changed it to square brackets [] and it worked. odd
