Seems legit.

With regards to Tebow, I think it has more to do with his personality and demeanor than it does his faith TBH. There are plenty of Christian athletes that are respected and treated like normal people.

I think Collins is a good guy and I'm happy for him. I do think the media coverage is overblown and will be for the rest of time any time a gay athlete comes out.

Oh well.

What say you?

I think it has more to do with Tebows persona. I'm a Christian and I don't personally care for the constant (well not anymore) barrage of his. Maybe it's more of the media playing it up though. Maybe he just makes me look at my devotion(or lake thereof) and feel like a piece of shite.

Except for Tebow got plenty of support, pub, and even commercial endorsements for "being Christian". And it's made him enough of a polarizing figure that he's been hired as a SEC Network commentator despite the fact he talks like it's one huge run on sentence.

It's a shame that guys like Kitna don't get more pub though.

I think you'll see it less and less as more people feel comfortable with coming out as you have with any "groundbreaking" (I use this term loosely) athlete arriving on the scene.

I think it's dumb. It seems to imply that Christians in this country have received the same persecution gays have. Plus, Christians are a dime a dozen so it's not really news worthy to have an outspoken Christian in professional sports. An openly gay professional athlete is pretty big news, so of course media is going to flock to that story until it becomes more common.

Ok, what barrage did Tebow orchestrate exactly? I felt more like it was the media that felt like it was needed to rub it in everyone's face how 'christian' Tebow is. He didn't shrink from talking about his faith when asked, and credited his success to it. Good for him. He didn't pay money to make billboards or do public service announcements.

It certainly wasn't for his playing ability in the NFL. Why else do you think he got the pub?

Being a high draft pick.

Being a two time National Champion QB.

Being a Heisman winner.

His unorthodox playing style.

And being very outwardly spoken about being Christian.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. But it's hypocritical to call out another person/group of people for getting pub for non-sports reasons.

I was just pointing out the primary reasons he got the pub. No one would have cared how outspoken he was if he wasn't producing on the field, you know?

And yet he got hired on for the SEC Network over guys that are probably much better analysts.

As am I. Surely you're not naive to think his Christian faith didn't get him additional pub?

He was a personality at that point. Networks always hire personalities over analysts (hence, why most female sports reporters are also very nice looking).

Didn't say that. Of course he received pub for that.

Let's not pretend that that is the primary reason, though. He was good in college, and always wore his faith on his sleeve. He's hardly the only one to have ever done this.

But his success as a collegiate athlete was much more of a springboard than him not being shy about his faith.

Not to mention the media turned it into more of a spectacle than he did. Deon Sanders was far more demonstrative about his faith than Tebow ever was.

This.

Also because Christians are a dime a dozen it gets old fast. Ironically, most of the people who get tired of the constant bible-thumping some engage in are Christians. That fact makes it rather odd to even attempt to cry persecution because it's akin to saying "the christians are persecuting me for being christian!"

The additional amount was very small from the sports media. His image was built up by a lot of people outside the sports media world because he's white, Christian, and had a really good collegiate career. This cartoon is an illustration of that.

Related to this, what did y'all think of the stunned silence when Matthew McC thanked God in his acceptance speech at the Oscars? It really was quiet after yhat till he made a reference to his dad drinking beer in his underwear a bit later.

I heard about it, but I don't watch the Oscars.

Hollywood ain't exactly known for being pro-faith, so they probably just didn't know how to take it.

Eh, the "stunned silence" is a bit much. I watched it and his speech was very well received. Largely because it came off as sincere.

Oh it was very sincerebas well as well received. I just found it funny that they laughed and clapped along at everything but that.

He's a sip but I like that the guy is who he is.
