I don't have a problem with Rick Perry. He seems like a nice guy and all, but he has inadvertently done more damage to A&M than any other governor in the past has done. He means good, but he doesn't know how higher learning should be run and he will cause A&M to become a degree factory.

Higher Learning institutions =/= Businesses

I'm OK with naming a wing of a building after him or maybe a small street on west campus to show our appreciation of him leading this state for so many years (which he did a good job considering many things), but NOT the Academic Building. It would be the ultimate form of comic irony if we did.

I'm sure there will be an announcement at Commencement, as he is the speaker.

I wish the Regents would reconsider. I am not opposed to "a" building with the Governor's name on it - just not this one.

There's a Google doc - open petition against the idea floating among the current students right now.

I agree, and I actually have no problem with Perry.

No need to rename the Academic Bldg, though. Slap his name on something else.

Perry as a person is nice enough.

Perry as a politician... the dude simply has no right having his name on an academic building with the shite he has been pushing on Texas education.

I've voted against it and sent an e-mail to Vickie@tamus.edu, who is apparently gathering opinions. I don't have high hopes, though. Any dipshit that refers to us as "The Aggie Nation", as Jim Schwertner did, has no clue.

Just a really, really stupid idea.

Yup, we have our accepted jargon, and "Aggie Nation" is decidedly NOT in the lexicon

I can understand why people might have reservations on why person X has name on the building but I part of me is shocked there is any resistance given the fact that everything on campus is named after someone, some of them are the most random of objects.

On an unrelated note apparently someone got hit by a train off of Wellborn near the bridge that goes over University.

LINK

I was wondering what had happened. I went out a couple hours ago and one of the longer trains I've seen here was stopped on the tracks, blocking several crossings and the street was blocked off in every direction.

First, the 12 empty seats at Kyle.

Now, renaming the Academic Building.

That's 2 strikes Board of Regents.....use your last one wisely.
