Major arctic blast (reminiscent of the ones from the 70s and 80s) on the way...

to much of the country from the Rockies eastward including the Deep South early next week. Models showing single digit lows through much of Northern Alabama and Northern Georgia and single digit above and single digit below zero lows throughout all of Tennessee. Birmingham, for example, isn't forecasted to get above the upper 20s from Sunday evening until Wednesday afternoon. Probably haven't seen an arctic outbreak like this since the late 80s.
P.S. There is a temperature map about halfway down the first page of the linked thread.

I remember these types of things as a kid in the 80's when the temps would get in the single digits in the Deep South. Haven't seen this in years.

It has gotten into the single digits here in Central Alabama as recently as January 2003 so to be fair it hasn't been since the 80s since it happened. December 2000 had impressive arctic outbreak but it was quick hitting. There was even a short lived rather impressive outbreak in January 2011 but it was short lived and not as cold as what is coming. This one that is coming looks like it could rival the December 1989 arctic outbreak with the expanse and strength of the cold air. That outbreak was the last time I can remember high temperatures not getting out of the mid 20s even near Montgomery where I grew up. I'm not sure this one will get quite as cold that far South but northern Alabama and northern Georgia and points north will see temps as bad as the great artic outbreaks of the 80s. If any of these areas get snow then look out.

Ah yes, back in the good ole days when global cooling and the quickly approaching ice age were the environmentalist's preferred talking points.

That's with a bare ground too. Imagine what the temperature would be with a couple of inches of snow on the ground.

The low will be 10 in Oxford on Monday. Looks like my roommates will be smoking cigs in the garage.

Pretty fricking cold winter so far.
Fayetteville has had one snow of 6 inches (that hung around for over a week), and a dusting Dec 23rd, and woke up to a dusting of snow this morning.

Farmer's Almenac called for it to be a brutal winter.
Not necessarily in storms and snow, but just pure cold. I've wore a jacket just about every day since November.

Going to be colder than that. Looks like -10 to -15 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Will be worse if we get the snow on Sunday. NWS Louisville this afternoon had this to say about Sunday: "The GFS, after trending slightly warmer for a couple
of runs, has changed its mind and gone back to a colder solution and
gives a perfect surface low track for heavy snow here."

High of 16 and low of 6 for Fayetteville, according to Weather.com.
Its been colder than that a few times within the past few years.
Oh well, fewer bugs & snakes come spring.
