On FGs like that teams usually always have someone in the end zone to return it.

It was a 57 yarder with a second left in a tied game. Why not? Why wouldn't you try it?

its not like it was that uncommon of a play....maybe the end result of a touchdown may have been uncommon, but not the attempt.
Just today the Vikings returned a field goal attempt vs. the Bears
