We need to vet our staffers better.

quote:

A University of Mississippi employee learned the importance of school spirit this month after being reprimanded by an administrator for cheering on an opposing team during a home football game. The reprimand came in the form of a mass letter from the physical plant director to all his staff.

According to an article in the Daily Mississippian, which first reported on the incident, "The letter states that while the university will never tell its employees whom they can or cannot cheer for, there is an expectation to support Ole Miss while on the clock.... [I]f employees cannot support Ole Miss, they shall 'remain neutral and without comment.' "

The comment in question was actually a tweet, sent while the employee was working the sidelines of the Oct. 19 game versus Louisiana State University. A Mississippi spokesman, Danny N. Blanton, said in an email to Inside Higher Ed that the message was in response to the employee's "game day responsibilities."

"We in no way try to influence who our employees support in their own time," Blanton said. "However, we will ask that when employees are on the clock that they are respectful of their employer and not disrupt the team or the fans. We also ask employees who are hired to do a specific job to do that job and not focus on social media."
Mississippi pulled a major upset over No. 11 LSU to win the game, 27-24.

Damn shame they weren't able to find and reprint the tweet that so outraged the boss at Ole Miss.

In other news, WTF is going on with the water at Ole Miss?

I believe all the construction they are doing has contaminated the water on campus.

so i'm assuming this tweeter was an LSU grad? Kind of petty for Ole Miss to care about his tweets. One of my best friends in college has worked for several different athletic departments since graduating, and none of them ever cared about him showing support for his school. It's not like this guy was wearing an LSU shirt on the sidelines. I'm actually kind of surprised this is even a story.

A lot of unknowns. Incessant tweeting rather than doing their job? Or is it an officious a-hole throwing their weight around?

Imagine the response to the staffer's tweet if the Rebels had lost. Off to the Russian Front! But a memo to all hands? Realy?

I'm disappointed in Ole Miss and expect better of them.

And apologies to Ole Miss fans for this. I couldn't figure out how to farq a Black Bear.

Here's what they told us (per the DM):

quote:

The university employee was on the clock and working on the sidelines at the football game during the time when he posted the comments, according to University Communications Director Danny Blanton.

Blanton highlighted that the main issue lies more so within an employee not doing their job, rather than supporting their team of choice.

When you’re working gameday responsibilities, number one: You have a job to do and unless you’re working in media relations, that’s not tweeting. And number two: Don’t be disruptive to the team and the fans while you’re working,” Blanton said.

University Communications monitors social media activity to strictly report what is being said about the university itself, not to keep watch or track of individual employee behavior, according to Blanton.

Considering what Physical Plant employees are largely responsible for doing, I can't blame them too much for reprimanding staffers for tweeting while on the clock.

Just humorous that it was a LSU fan on the payroll.

Good info. Thanks. One of my project supervisors in Baton Rouge was a huge Gump always wearing his scarlet A hat to work. One day about a week after a loss to Bama, he is doing some work in LSU Football Ops-WEARING THE HAT!!! I couldn't finish one call from LSU big dogs before the next one called, then architects, engineers. Good Lord. The same thing was happening to the owner of the company but on his mobile. Thing is, our uniform policy only called for a company shirt, no hat. And as far as I am concerned he was guilty of stupidity but ought to be able to wear what he wants. So he eventually had one hat in his car to put on when he was at LSU and wore his Bama colors everywhere else.

If you got through the first sentence you'd know we're talking about an administrator.

It is Freeze, but can you honestly imagine Saban taking it well if a Bama employee did this during a game?

But it's not unthinkable, or even unlikely, that Freeze knew about this and about the response.

I disagree. If you're employed by a school, you should have the decency and courtesy to at least be silent when said school is playing your alma mater. Most especially when you're on the clock.
