Compared to last year?Watching yalls game it looked like your front 7 was swarming to the ball carrier. What's your take on yalls defense this year. How good can they be?

For a couple of years that has been an emphasis of our recruiting it should start to show this year.

This defense started out looking better than last year's d. I think we'll get more pressure on the qb from the ends, and I do think the d is faster over all.

Potential to lead the country again. Gotta watch missed assignments though. Probably a little more weaker at the run, but I think the pass defense is going to be better and will have a better pass rush.

I think this is the fastest defense from top to bottom that we have had under Saban. Doesn't have the star power (yet) of 2011, but they are fast as lightning.

Yes quite a bit faster, Stinson has really improved on getting off initial block, Hubbard is Hubbard but got held a lot of the night from watching replay, would've gotten 2 sacks, 1 especially OT grabbed his face mask after he beat him with explosion and dip

also A'Shawn "Big 86" was so impressive he's like a taller Dareus true 2 tech & Allen was faster than I thought he would be & both those guys are TF

Already better than 2012 or 2010. Probably as good as 2009, potential to be as good as 2011.

Pagan and Stinson are probably the best DE duo we've had in terms of making plays in the backfield. Alabama has a ton or pass rushers in Pagan, Stinson, Dickson, Hubbard, Devall, Tomlinson, and Anderson. That's not even counting the freshman who have looked good early in Robinson and Allen. LaMichael Fanning also has received praise from Saban as far as rushing from the inside.

Agree but until the end. I seriously don't think any Saban defense will ever come close. That defense was hell on Earth.

I'm saying that today & everyone is saying I'm crazy, but I REALLY like this group

It is 1 thing to be a big fricker like Cody was and demand doubles because of your size, but it presents a totally different problem when the ends can clean an initial block and force an OL to adjust or draw more than 1 blocker because of the speed

That's what this D looks like it is capable of so far..we will just have to see how good VT's line was compared to some of the SEC opponents

Can't argue that. 2011 was just mean and nasty. Not necessarily as fast.

Well, judging by the first game, they will be great. And judging by the first game, they had better be. :)

May have to do with the fact that because Logan Thomas was VT's QB, there was little to no threat of a passing game.

I think this defense will be better than 2012, but a step behind 2011 (mainly because it's a bit too unrealistic to expect this defense to replicate those numbers).

At one point, VT ran 35 plays and managed to get double-digit yardage once. That's nearly unheard of regardless of how bad an offense may be.

Stole this from another board:

VT only had four plays that went 10 or more yards.

These four plays accounted for 65.6% of their total yards.

Not counting punts or FG attempts, VT ran 59 plays.

Of those 59 plays, Bama held them to 3 yards or less 47 times, including 29 plays of 0 or less yards (not including the pick six, either).

Here's every play result (in yardage) for VT:

ive pointed this out in other threads, yes he is not good, but we did hold him to less than half of his still-not-good completion average of ~50% (last year, ~60% the year before). he was at something disgusting like 19% in this game, and was a non-factor as a runner or as a scrambler. I think it shows that we have been focusing on learning how to deal better with mobile QBs. he averages over 3 YPC for his career, had .4 ypc in saturday's game
