What is the greatest that state could possibly be at football?
1. With a coach like saban
2. With mullen
3. With a better coach than mullen but worse than saban (i.e. Hudspeth)
thoughts?

My answers:
1. SEC championship if ALL the cards are played right. Sugar bowl is the peak.
2. Chick-fil-a
3. Cotton

The ship baby. One day and none of us may live to see it but one day

When Oxford is burning, and Hudspeth is cackling over the ashes, you won't be asking that question.

Our ultimate goal needs to be a 9 win regular season with a Cotton or Peach Bowl invite.
Let's not kid ourselves, with the shape the SEC is in we aren't getting to Atlanta anytime in the foreseeable future.

Agreed. Now, what needs to happen to turn us from a team that strives for 8 or 9 wins and a trip to the Gator bowl to a team that expects to win 10+ games a year and a trip to an elite bowl?

Dak + Sandberg -- Plus an OL littered with 4*s rather than 2*s...
And actually f'n paying a good DC to stay here. Pretty sure Collins is the only MF in the league making less than $500k...

He is our freeze..friendly guy, great recruiter, and has had success everywhere he has gone.
Seriously, OM fans better hope he never comes to MSU

He's also from MS and wants to be at MSU

This is true, Dan will always be a damn yankee..
I think it's funny that fans of other schools say we need to keep Dan for consistency.

UNA was always really good with Hud but had issues with closing the deal on the big prize. He's also had a couple of 9-4 seasons at a school that has been epically bad in football.
If he ever gets to MSU, he will be a solid head coach, and he will be there for a long time because it is where he wants to be.
We like people that are successful. We like people that want to coach at our school. I can't speak for others, but that is the reason that I am high on him.

Miss State, OM, Vandy, Missouri, Kentucky are all in the same boat. The right coach can have them winning 6-9 games a year. Tennessee is also coming into that level I believe.
And what those schools have to hope for is that they put together a couple of recruiting classes that end up being special so that they might put together that team able to compete for a BCS spot.

Any team with the right personnel can win the ship during any given season. Take AU's run a few years back. Had we won the bidding war for Cam I feel like our seasons would have flip flopped and it very easily could have been us in Glendale.

I dont. I think we still would have lost 1 game and that would have kept us out of the title game. And guys like Cam Newton are extremely rare. He is literally the best QB in SEC history for 1 season.

Definitely true for baseball -- maybe even basketball -- not football. It's nice to think about -- but the reality is that no team has ever played for a BCS title with a 4yr recruiting average outside the top 18. Us or someone like us winning the national title would probably be the single greatest college football story of all time.
In 16 years of the BCS, 15 teams have made the game -- 5 of the "big 6" in the SEC -- Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Florida St, Ohio St, Miami, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oregon, Va Tech
No team outside the "Big 6" has won the SEC in football since 1963. Kentucky won a share of one in 76 with Georgia, but lost the head to head contest. That's:
Alabama - 17 titles
Florida - 9 titles
Georgia - 8 titles
Tennessee - 7 titles
LSU - 6 titles
Auburn - 5 titles
We already came the closest of any non-big6 team in the modern era -- BY FAR...can we get back there? It's unlikely with aTm, LSU, and Bama as they are currently configured...

We were around 7 minutes of game clock from an SEC title in 1998. That's pretty dang close.

THIS. Our defense was far better than AU 2010 IMO.. Cam is probably the only QB that could've reach continuous progress in Les Koenning's play calling system.

We were 1 minute away from the SEC title in 1980.
Florida was beating Georgia and Hershal Walker. Had them backed up on their own 8 yard line with a minute left to go- and this happened on 3rd down:
