Among other notable MU football news, Pinkel said Henry Josey recently ran 4.44 in the 40, did well in agility drills, is ready to practice.

Terez A. Paylor ?@TerezPaylor
A few highlights from a three-man sit down with #Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel: 1) Said RBs Hansbrough and Steward both ran laser-timed 4.3 40s..

Terez A. Paylor ?@TerezPaylor
Pinkel was very complimentary of redshirt freshman DT Harold Brantley. Said he wouldn't have redshirted at #Mizzou in most years.

3) TE Sean Culkin is up to 245 pounds and runs a 4.5. Pinkel also confirmed Josey's 4.4 40 and said he should be full go in spring camp.

Terez A. Paylor ?@TerezPaylor
5) Pinkel also said it would be fair and accurate to say you'll see less empty sets this year, though #Mizzou will still be a spread team.

Joe Walljasper ?@JoeWalljasper
Pinkel didn't get specific on offensive changes but hopes to involve tight end more with Waters and Culkin and use fewer empty backfields.

UPDATE

Terez A. Paylor ?@TerezPaylor
6) Pinkel on Maty Mauk, who seems to be very much in the QB race: "He's got a very strong arm. He can throw the ball 75 yards." #Mizzou

Terez A. Paylor ?@TerezPaylor
7) Pinkel said DGB rolled his ankle in mat drills and had his foot in a boot, but recently ran a 4.4 40 and he's "probably" faster than that

That's encouraging. I like the idea of having a guy back there to make them respect the run. Especially since it sounds like we may have a few threats to actually run besides just Tanklin.

Sounds like a move to the offense that Pinkel brought from Toledo. I hope so. That offense was physical and utilized the TEs very well.

Good to hear some of those comments. Time will tell. Not sure about the Brantley comments. It's not like we were extremely deep at DT this year. If he redshirted last year, my guess is he would actually redshirt most years. All sounds encouraging though. Wait and see approach here.

Think it has more to do with quality than quantity. Sheldon was going to eat up most of the game and some decent back ups, would have made little sense to not redshirt him.

I hear what you're saying and not questioning redshirting him, I just know nearly every game, Richardson was probably over used and was gassed by games end. If Brantley had showed that much last year, I'm sure he would have found the field is all.

Less empty backfield sets which also means less 5 WR sets. That is what I want to see.

When you have a top 10 draft pick, and really only get to use him for one year as a starter, you gas him. The non freshman backups that we had were good enough to plug in when Sheldon was on the sideline. To waste a year on somebody to just plug them in a few minutes a game doesn't make sense, especially when there are older players that can do the same thing.

Sounds like that is the plan, Sam.

Makes one wonder which talented receiver is going to be on the sideline too much. Especially considering we are likely to see more 2 TE formations, and with true TEs, not DGB. (Not that DGB won't be on the field, he'll be at a true WR spot).

Yup. Branley wasn't going to pass up Hoch, Vincent and Foster as a freshman. No point in playing him. Brantly won't likely pass up any of those guys this year, either.

Mo, I wouldn't have burned his redshirt either. I just found the part of him talking about any year but last year to be the part that struck me as odd. Seemed to me that we complained about depth all season. Gassing Richardson over the long haul is one thing, but having him gassed in the 4th quarter every game was doing the team no good.

Hansbrough is a sophomore - he was the RB that was the victim of the pile-driving goon from Alabama.

Steward is a RSfreshman. Henry Josey will be a RSjunior.

Another one to watch will be Chase Abbington, a true freshman who will likely play as well.

I really like how morgan steward runs... I hope he gets into the rotation. Such long strides for his frame.

Love Hansbrough

I don't have a crystal ball, but I expect Josey to let people down some... and that's not saying he won't be very good, but I doubt he will dominate the way he did in the B12.

Then what about Marcus Murphy? Primarily a special teams player?

And now Abbington?

Some good runners are going to be watching a lot of snaps.

I don't expect Josey to be the back he was before he got hurt. I'm hoping for different, but still good - I just don't see him at that 2011 level where he was making defenses look ridiculous. Unfortunately.

I think Murphy will be more of a situational back and play special teams. Hansbrough will hopefully get better at protecting the ball. Should be an interesting year.

Never know, could also be just as good if not better.

Have to remember the defenses he will be playing against are light years better than the ones he was making look stupid though.

Main reason it will be so hard for him to be the way he was before (as you already know), I'd think most fans would be able to understand this.... but we'll see. That avg of 8 yards a carry might drop down to like 4-5. Hope he a guy that gets the occasional big run, holds onto the ball, and gets the important yards in the trenches with his big heart.

Well-said, Gray. His production will not be what it was at 8+ ypc, but I'm hoping he's still a good, dangerous back that will keep defenses on their toes.

The other possibility is that defenses key on him and open up options for a 2 or even 3 back set.

Semo - You think Abbington will play this year? I hope so myself, but with all the numbers, I just don't see Pinkel playing him. Who will we have? Josey, Hansbrough(sp?), Steward, White(Diff type of back), and Murphy.
