Do you think he would be a good fit at Arkansas, and could he be a GREAT Head Coach?

Nobody knows. In reality Saban runs the Defense. But, Smart has had to have picked up a lot from him.

Nobody knows if anybody who has never been a HC can be a GREAT head coach. I'd say he definately has the capability to be very successful somewhere though.

Who knows? Hasn't had a chance to really show anybody anything as a Head Coach, has he?

Dunno.

But I have a better feeling about his chances after what Jimbo/Muschamp have done at FSU/UF this year.

I would still be wary about being the school to give CKS his 1st head coaching job.

I would say the best barometer would be Muschamp at UF. Very disciplined with his approach and is having great success with it. I see Kirby Smart as the exact same type of coach that will eventually be just like other branches from the Saban tree of coaching. Both seemed to pick up a lot from Saban's defensive schems.

He would be a terrible head coach. Everyone should just drop him from their wish list. He is a terrible recruiter and doesn't know squat about defense.

LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!

FWIW, Finebaum said he doubted Smart would come to Arkansas, but would go to TN or UGA, when it opens.

I think Ark will have to settle for a Sonny Dykes or Willie Taggert type, although the latter reminds me of Turner Gill for some reason.

Risky hire in my opinion. He definitely runs Saban's defense and I think he could run it just as well with or without Saban at this point. However, who knows if he can run the whole show (recruiting, fundraising, press conferences, etc.). Saban is control of so much that his assistants don't really get the chance to prove much in these areas. I would want to see him succeed at a smaller school first before hiring him personally.

This is a great point. Saban is the best at "compartmentalizing" roles. He doesn't want his staff to do anything except what they are hired to do. If you are a coordinator, you don't make copies, edit game tape, type your own notes, worry about player grades/conduct, or anything. They don't have to worry about what the players eat or what condition they are in. He even compartmentalizes the recruiting process. Coordinators do recruit, but they don't compile recruiting footage, stats, or even look at the kids until they pass the first few sets of screens done by some other person. Taking the leap from individual contributor to mastermind of the whole organization is a big step.

He's going to wait one more yr for the Ga job, imo.

You would be wrong.

I'm sure you guys will make a decent hire. But I'm not sure I'd list Kirby Smart in that category. I have little doubt that he could develop a decent defense but there are a lot of coordinators who struggle going to the head job. For instance, Pelini is about to get run out of Nebraska right now and I think most thought he was more ready than Smart.

There are basically two lists, one with names that every one looks at and recognizes the names, the second lists are those who could be the next big thing in the coaching world.

The problem is the length of the search is two the point where all the usual suspects have been debated until there is nothing new to talk about and now the other list is being done the same.

Jeff Long is still on his first list and that is all that matters.

I don't think I'd want him as a head coach. At least, not until he succeeds somewhere else first.

if I was making the call, I'd hire Briles. He's an easy hire as you can def pay him more and it's an obvious upgrade so of course he'd be interested. He's got inroads to Texas recruiting. And he's winning at Baylor. If he can't win at Arky I'd be shocked.

Actually think he's a perfect fit for you and that's the hire that would honestly worry me. You'll never out Bama Bama or out LSU LSU. You shouldn't go for a mimick hire imo.

All of this. You can find numerous examples of people jumping from coordinator to coach and thriving, and others who failed miserably.

Without any head coach experience, it is impossible to say how Smart will do as a HC until he actually does it.

If I were shopping a coach this year, I would definitely interview Willie Taggart. No doubt about it.

agreed

I wouldn't want a SEC school to hire a assistant from somewhere else, think they should be a HC before coming into this conference

Boom obviously is a little different but the haven't the rest been HC's elsewhere except for Joker? Mullins I guess too
