One name I haven't heard in the "Fire Chiz!" hysteria

Cutcliffe. He seemed to have done a decent job his first go-round as an HC in the SEC. He's certainly gotten a dead-end program like Duke off the ground. Any reason he wouldn't get consideration on the Plains?

I didn't get his response to you. Why is Cut such a negative option?

My opinion, good assistant, not very good HC. Duke is not Auburn - yet.

Would certainly love to have him as an OC.

Would be a good hire for them, because they really can't do any better than assistant types like him and Eugene.

My die hard aubie friend wants kirby smart. Would never happen thankfully, I think Kirby is in line for greatness much like Boom at UF. Of all the saban proteges they are the most similar to saban

Why would he want to take a step down from Duke to Auburn?

I assume you mean you don't consider him a top flight headcoach. To have a .500 record at Ole Miss and Duke as HC, you have to be pretty damn good.
Is he in the uppermost echelon, of course not. I'm just not sure what the basis is for calling him not very good. He is like a miracle worker.
ETA: He was 44-29 at Ole Miss at 25-23 in SEC games. The real hit to his record is at the graveyard that is Duke where he is 20-34/8-26 when they are allowed to play between basketball seasons.

hate to see family turn on one of their own like this. Come to think of, we really haven't heard much of the family propaganda this season. It wouldn't really fit with firing your only living, NCAA sanction free, championship winning coach/family leader.

It is a HUGE risk. The guy has never been a DC outside from Saban and you think he is qualified to be the HC at Auburn? You don't what you're getting with him. Auburn needs someone with experience as a HC.

AU's already gone the defensive coordinator guru route with CGC. They better be looking for an offensive guru next time around.
And, no one at Auburn Univeristy wants ANYTHING remotely connected to, or resembling anything from Bammer, period.

Auburn hired a head coach with a 5-19 record as a head coach.
Florida hired an unproven head coach and he turned the program around in a year and has them in the top 5. Smart is a proven recruiter and has worked under saban for a long time now.
There aren't many proven big name coaches that are going to take the auburn job, simple as that. Smart is going to be a homerun, wait and see. It's obvious he doesn't mind putting in work since he's stuck with nick for this long

You know where Pat dye coached before becoming the HC at auburn right?

chizik didn't spend 5 years under the man widely considered the best defensive mind in the game either. Kirby Smart is going to be a hell of a head coach just like Muschamp will be. Florida is going to be a fricking powerhouse for 20 years, wait and see. Sometimes you have to risk it to get the biscuit

Cutcliffe is too old.

Because prior to spending the last 5 1/2 years under saban's skirt, he has no record to go on. He spent one year at each stop.
99 - admin assistant at uga
00 - db coach at valdosta state
01 - dc at valdosta state
02/03 - grad assistant at fsu
04 - db coach at lsu
05 - rb coach at uga (really?)
06 - safeties coach for dolphins
07/present - holding an empty title for saban
There is nothing to show that the guy has the ability to run a program, let alone how good of a dc he actually is. Muschamp was a badass DC for LSU, AU and Texas before getting his shot at the HC position. He was also the Assistant HC for the Dolphins, and HC in waiting for Texas before being hired. So he had experience. Smart has none of that. I'd rather have Charlie Strong, and I'm not even that sold on him.

quote:One thing you might not understand, having no big instate rival, Auburn needs to hit a homerun on a new coach (if and when they go after one).
Is he in the uppermost echelon, of course not.
Plus, the new coach should show he can beat Alabama. Cutcliffe is 2-5 against Bama with his wins coming during Bama's down years 2001 and 2003.
The other games, Bama won by big numbers with the last win in 2010 being 62-13. LINK
Just like this year, with Auburn's year in the shitter, they probably will have one goal left... beat Alabama and destroy our season.
