Other than this lateral move to his alma mater, all of those were advancements. Watch an alabama game, kirby smart is calling defensive plays. I'm sure saban is the one making the majority of the plans, but smart follows it to a T.

Like I said, Auburn isn't getting some big name proven head coach unless it petrino. Strong hasn't proven to be a great head coach...If nick saban retired tomorrow I would want Kirby, plain and simple. Keep that ball rolling. There just aren't enough big time proven coaches out there and the ones that are are entrenched at their spot

Auburn hired a head coach with a 5-19 record as a head coach.

yeah...that was Jacobs hiring his buddy. most Auburn fans hated the hire.

Florida hired an unproven head coach and he turned the program around in a year and has them in the top 5. Smart is a proven recruiter and has worked under saban for a long time now.

no they Florida didn't. Muschamp had proven himself.

Why wouldn't the head coach that specialzes in defense be the one with the majority input on the gameplan?

I understand not wanting Smart because he is a gump, but to say the guy isn't qualified to be a HC is retarded.

Were Ole Miss and Duke better after Cut took over those programs?

No he hadn't. He was DC under good head coaches on teams with awesome talent, just like smart

What has he shown to make you think he is qualified to make the decisions that a HC makes?

Muschamp worked at a lot of places and was able to keep top defenses. He was proved himself enough to be named coach in waiting at Texas. Smart has no resume outside of Saban.

Smart needs to prove himself as a DC at another top school or become a HC at a Kentucky or CUSA school.

Absolutely. He very well might end up being a great HC down the road. Just not willing to take a chance if I'm an AU athletic director.

I would have no problem having the guy at Auburn if he had the resume to back it up.

Your post was the definition of missing the point. To say Cutcliffe is a bad head coach is wrong. To your other wayward point, when Saban was hired at Bama, he had exactly zero wins at Jordan-Hare stadium.

I still haven't heard a legit reason why Cut couldn't be successful at AU.

He could be, but not worth the risk. He's 64-63 as an HC. We've been down this road. You like him so much, tell Mal to give him a call when Saban jumps on his pontoon.

I can't speak to whether he will be a good HC or not, but FWIW, I was told that when Smart interviewed for the A&M job, he was completely unprepared and bombed it. He didn't know anything about the school or the program. He couldn't even say what offense or defense we were currently running.

Supposedly he was serious about interviewing and really wanted the job, but I guess he just expected it to be handed to him as Saban's disciple. Idk, I just find it strange that the guy wouldn't prepare for an interview.
