Russ Mitchell, an SEC blogger on College Football News, posted this grim commentary on the SEC's new scheduling format. I think he's right on the money.

It's too bad that for most of the outside world following this story, it's become the simple narrative of "OMGZ, Les Miles is scared of Florida!!!", and not the real issue of the scheduling.

For instance, under the current format, I might have 3 or 4 more chances to go to a game in Knoxville. IN MY LIFETIME. That's ridiculous.

Agree, but everyone was saying Les was nuts for wanting to drop the permanent opponent from the east/west. The only way to see the east/west is to make it 6 then 2 different teams each year. This way you only have to wait six years to see the others visit.

Might we one day see a major conference reorg when we get to 16 teams? Perhaps. If so, then conceivably the 6-1-1 format is simply a delaying tactic until we move to pods of four teams each, and in so doing identify a

I am concerned that if we go to this format, LSU will end up in a western pod with aTm, Arky and Missouri.

If it benefits Bama, it will remain.

Learn to deal with this reality.

Obviously this is all that matters. See the entire 2011 season as proof

Its only a matter of time before the East opponents will begin to bitch about the fact that they are only in Texas once every 6-7 years. Mizzou too. One of the selling point to A&M had to be you can get in to Texas. Now, USCe gets to swap their perm opp to AM, while UGA, UF, UK and UT only get into the state once every few years. That will cause more of a shite storm than LSU fans bitching about playing UF every year.

The current SEC format is a total nightmare. Solid article that rests on facts and not emotional tie ins.

I think the SEC may have broken a good thing for money. I am excited about having aTm on the schedule, but at what cost? Will the SEC remain the juggernaut if we weaken the competition and the rivalry?

Put me down for a "Dislike"

The only thing I see is a "Super Conference" emerging like the NFL with divisions and playoffs in pursuit of more revenue. At least we have a great team in the East dedicated to us. It could be Vandy or Mizzouuuuu...coming into Tiger Stadium every other year.

I hate the 6-1-1 format.

Adding Texas A&M and Missouri ruined the SEC forever.

I've yet to see a valid reason why you can't move Auburn and Alabama to the East and Vandy and Mizzou to the West. Then it's an actual geographic reality in East and West.

It used to be that the West was weak and the East was strong with Tennessee and Florida as kings; now it's LSU and Bama. Things chance as far as who's on top but this would allow the sacred Auburn-Georgia and Alabama-Tennessee games to be played every year and for fans to actually get to see all of the teams in their stadium more than 4 times a lifetime.

It doesn't matter what the format is. In two more years the sec will be adding teams again and we will be having this conversation all over again about a totally new format smh.

The right way to deal with all this is to start by putting Alabama and Auburn in the East, Mizzou and A&M in the West, and moving Kentucky to the West. The initial shock will be a little hard, but within 3 years it will seem like the natural order of things. It will enable 'Bama and Auburn to play their "rivalry" games with Tennessee and Georgia, thus relieving the pressure on the concept of the permanent cross-division opponent, and will create some natural rivalries among Mizzou, Arkansas and Kentucky.

The current east would burn the SEC offices down if this was seriously considered.

Good read. Glad someone can show it in a way that doesn't make them seem "scared". I know Les had the same idea and objection to the situation. Its not like we are scared of Florida, but honestly it doesn't portray who is actually the best in most circumstances.
