UT Football Future

I am not sure UT gets back to the football of 1995-2002 anytime soon. I am not suggesting that the academic side should be ignored but it sounds like the football program is heading in a direction where they will be recruiting players based on academics first. Is this happening at other schools in the SEC (besides Vandy)?
In today's Tennessean:
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -
The University of Tennessee-Knoxville's incoming freshman class has the highest average ACT score in the school's history.
Freshmen beginning classes on Wednesday have an average score on the ACT college entrance exam of 26.7. That's 0.3 points higher than last year, according to a news release from the school.
Dooley at SEC Media Days:
They set these benchmarks of APR because they want to improve how we do things and football has met those benchmarks," Dooley said. "Now they're upset because we're the lowest of all the sports. My question back was: at one point is the lowest good enough? The lowest guy in the medical class still becomes a doctor."
Sports talk radio in Knoxville:
If what I’m hearing is accurate, and I’m believing that it is, then Jimmy Cheek is in the process of remaking UT’s athletic department to fit a vision of a university that will be more athletics with a heavy emphasis on academics. And more than one source over the weekend told me that people on campus within the athletic department are concerned about where things are heading. To give you an example, sources tell me Derek Dooley is extremely concerned with this turn of events with Cheek. I was told he recently had a meeting with Cheek where he voiced his concern over a laundry list of requests including asking the university to play ball with him on letting a player into school. And I was told that Dooley was rejected on ALL of his requests. According to multiple sources, Dooley has even appealed to big money boosters over this but has been told that Cheek is in charge and they won’t intervene.

If you think Tennessee and its big Money boosters are going to allow Cheek to ruin our FB program, your crazy.

I think UT is in its 4th year of about a 15 year shite streak just like we went on at Alabama. Maybe one or maybe 2 ok years in there but nothing spectacular.

Yeah, we are very poorly positioned for 2012 and 2013...

I agree, and if anyone thinks/believes this team has less talent than the last few years is brain dead.
Here's a noble idea, I believe Dooley is trying to impliment. Talent with smarts > talent with out smarts.
Look at nearly every player he has recuited upon his arrival. Nearly all have a 3.25 or better.

not only will UT have to recruit actual students, but they have to recruit out of state. They are not able to come up with SEC players from only the Knoxville region. They must recruit Louisville and Atlanta and get a few from even further.
They are going to be just a step above Vandy, going up against Michigan, Notre Dame, Stanford, NW, and CAL for the some of the guys who can play at the highest level and also do academics.
They dont have quite the issues that Stanford, CAL and NW do, but now they are in the same league with Michigan.
Tough row to hoe, thats for sure.

Tennessee hired a baseball coach without a college degree, so I don't think Tennessee is trying to be Vanderbilt here.

UT is not going to make an Auburn-like jump from struggeling to champs, but I think they have the right coach and great fans. Don't get discouraged waiting for instant wins, enjoy the climb back. As soon as you beat Bama again everything will change.

So, basically do what they've always done?
Thanks for the insight.

If you think Cheek is ruining the football program by not allowing a player into UT who set on his arse for two years instead of going JUCO like everyone else, then you are in a different reality. And if you think big money AD donors will have a say in the academic side of things, you're crazy. The Haslem's have a governor in tow as well, and the stature of the state's academic institutions is much more important than football.

Your wrong the state has Vandy for academics. Tennessee's job is to win S.E.C. titles and compete for BCS titles.

It seems pretty bright to me?
I kid, I kid. How crazy would it be though if they ended up getting rid of Dooley and hiring
Gus Malzahn?
Who would you Tennessee fans rather have?

Dooley is a clown; he'll be a flop. He's got a lot of y'all fooled.
