I'm having an argument with my auburn friend about the penalty at the end of the game that was called on LSU during the missed extra point. I said it was the only time that penalty was ever called in college football, he said it wasn't. Can anyone give me some insight?

Only time it was called I believe.... I might have heard about some Arizona state game it was called in though... Can't remember though

I don't know if it's the only time, probably the only time in that situation, though.

It's definitely not the only time it has been called.
It's in the rule book and is a 15 yard penalty.
The snapper is protected for obvious reasons.

It was a new rule at the time. Don't know if it's been called since. Here's a quote from the snapper, so tifwiw...
quote:
Auburn deep-snapper Pete Compton demystified the penalty. "It was actually roughing the snapper," he said. "My understanding of the rule is that you're not allowed to hit the snapper with his head down and they pretty much clobbered me right when I let go of the ball."

I think it was called in the UAB/Florida St. game in later in that same season

Not really, LSU had some legit players up front in '04 and gave AU all they could handle.

rarely called, probably should not have been called
but bottom line auburn deserved to win that game because they drove the field and scored on lsu in the 4th quarter (when everyone knew the game was in the balance)

So it was probably called a handful of other times that season?

That was put in place because of Boss Bailey IIRC. Him and his 46" vertical blocked 3 FGs in 2002. He would just elevate so high but then come down onto the LOS. It was my understanding that they put that rule in place to prevent players from jumping up and outwards and landing on an opposing player. I think that anyways, who knows it's been 6 years.

I thought the penalty was for a player jumping off of a lineman or something of the sort?

That snapper needs to STFU

"roughing the snapper" just doesn't sound like it should be a penalty

I had to go back and look at his profile to try and remember him.

Yep. It was called 1 or two weeks earlier in a PAC 10 game also.

I was just so glad it was CT who was able to catch the game winner.

Weird, I remembered it being from an LSU player jumping to block the kick and falling on another player. I don't remember shite about the deep snapper being involved.
