Weird, I remembered it being from an LSU player jumping to block the kick and falling on another player. I don't remember shite about the deep snapper being involved.

"roughing the snapper" just doesn't sound like it should be a penalty

I agree with this. What an absurd ending to that game. It was a good game and it's too bad the final result hinged on a call like that.

Auburn deep-snapper Pete Compton demystified the penalty. "It was actually roughing the snapper," he said. "My understanding of the rule is that you're not allowed to hit the snapper with his head down and they pretty much clobbered me right when I let go of the ball."

Yeah, but we'd have won in OT anyways, so it's really a non-issue.

Sounds like people are talking about two different scenarios; Roughing the snapper and Leaping. If it was the Leaping Foul, here's the info:

2004 Rule:
quote:

Rule 9-1-2-q: No defensive player who runs forward from beyond the neutral zone and leaps in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or try, may land on an opponent.

The wording was changed in 2005 to read:
quote:

Rule 9-1-2-q: Changed "an opponent" to "any player(s)." Also, added a sentence to read: "It is not a foul if the leaping player was originally lined up within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped." Rationale: Clarification that a leaping player is guilty of a foul if the player lands on any other player.

It's not a common foul, but certainly gets called a few times every year.

Vandy, last year

Hope that helps

Regardless, it was a dirty, illegal play that could have killed somebody. I'm just glad the officials had the guts to call it to keep those thugs from ending someone's career.

The weird small world thing is the guy that did the leaping for LSU was Chaz Ramsey's first cousin. Born in Mobile.

If Saban would have had a clue offensively it would not have mattered.

Defensively, one of Saban's patented prevent defense calls again that cost LSU against Hogs and Iowa.
