I know you are, I just don't want the plantation narrative to go on unquestioned. I think it's completely false.

He's entitled to his opinion, just like we are.

You should absolutely challenge the plantation narrative. I don't think there's sufficient proof either way. "Ole Mississippi" seems considerably more likely to me.

However, I think it's foolish to concentrate on the historical context (fact or fiction). The findings of the study determined that "Ole Miss" has positive meaning in the contemporary context. Some folks in the Ole Miss community took offense to Ole Miss even being considered, and created a much bigger problem with their backlash.

If everybody had read the study before reacting, then a bunch of a-hole journalists wouldn't have gone around spreading rumors as fact about Ole Miss and hurting our reputation.

We're our own worst enemy.

I don't think I'll be able to believe football season is here until the Georgia Dome's roof is above me.

What is the "historical meaning" of "ole miss" and please don't tell me wikipidea or someone making shite up. It was the nickname for the yearbook back in the day. show me some real historical data showing that it means the plantation owners wife. Nothing more, nothing less. The majority of people starting shite have an agenda outside of OM.

Interviews from the 1930s of 85 year old lady who was a former slave. If this isn't enough proof for you I don't know what is. There are hundreds of interviews from former Mississippi and slaves from the south. This was done by the Library of Confress in 1936-1939.

Interviewer: Watt McKinney
Person interviewed: Lucian Abernathy, Marvell, Arkansas
Age: 85

"I was borned in de 'streme norf part of Mississippi nigh de Tennessee line. Ole mars, he was name Will and dat was Mars Luch's pa and my ole miss, she name Miss Cynthia and young miss, her name Miss Ellen. Ole mars an' ole miss, dey just had de two chillun, Mars Luch and Miss Ellen; dat is what libed to be grown. It can't get here soon enough. Hopefully we can get off to a good start so a certain portion of the fan base will stop bitching and moaning so much.

Yeah, maybe by then they'll believe that they stopped the administration from changing the name, and they'll be over it.

My argument is undamaged... Those who believe in the virginity and purity of Elma Meek, just suffered a blow, though.

Yeah I'm not sure what Elma Meek intent was, but for some to say the word being used to describe the slave owner wife was just wikipedia BS is just wrong.

There are even cited instances where the slave master was referred to as Old, Ole (last name), or Mars for master.

all of this boils down to one thing....

...we have idiots losing their shite thinking Dan Jones is taking Ole Miss away from them even though Dan Jones is specifically stating that we will be using Ole Miss even more than before.

to summarize it.

idiot- "frick you dan jones. Don't take Ole Miss away"

Dan Jones- "we aren't taking Ole Miss away. In fact, Ole Miss is an integral part of our national branding and we will market that name even more"

idiot- "frick YOU DAN JONES. DON'T TAKE OLE MISS AWAY!!!!!!"

this is what is happening. But you can't argue with the idiots because they'll just say some tired bullshite like "well if you just read between the lines...."

"reading between the lines" is and always has been a bullshite line people use to try and justify a conclusion that they've come up with....

The Plantation narrative was literally on the school website for YEARS. It wasn't just made up, it was in the about us section of the schools website. Some PR genius thought "hey this is dumb as frick" 3 years ago and they took it down. I remember it vividly.

this is exactly right and something that the school needs to emphasize. One way to do that might be to get the damn wickipedia page changed.
