Lubick is a dynamic recruiter but unproven as an OC. That said, he's kind of a weird dude and I'm not sure he'd come back to Oxford

If the proven part is recruiting and the inexperience part is coaching, i'll take the recruiter.

I'm not saying I want Matt Luke to be the OC, but he's probably the least of our worries, coaching wise. He's easily one of our best recruiters (see the talent on the OL), the OL has performed well in pass pro for the majority of his tenure sans injuries, and you can make the argument that the offensive scheme limits the OL's ability to power run block. I just think it's easy for each of you guys to go with the token narrative, but Matt Luke is not the problem, he's a very good coach. He's Ole Miss through and through too.

What's sad is that you're right about Matt Luke. He may not be a very good o-line coach but we employ plenty worse coaches than Luke.

Luke at least recruits well. There are several other coaches that are far worse on the trail, even on the trail.

Problem with that is Freeze would never stay out his way. At least with a new guy you could get some push back. Luke isnt pushing back at Freeze at all.

^^^ How can you be so sure Freeze would never stay out of his way?

Because up until this point there hasn't been a moment where Freeze got out of the way and let the OC take control. He does a spurt here and there but always finds a way to get back in.

Our qb's were scrambling around plenty this season:

Well, that could be because we've never had a true OC under Freeze. Werner was QB coach and Luke was OL coach, and they got to share a co-OC title in name only (probably for pay purposes), but it's always been Freeze's offense. Not fair to criticize him for meddling in the offense when it's his offense for all intents and purposes.

This hire will determine if that continues IMO. Hire someone like Cumbie and I'd imagine Freeze will pass the play calling over to him. Someone like Longo may be brought in more for QB coaching and to provide a different perspective on the system already in place. Again, just IMO. I don't think either route is necessarily a bad thing though. Pros and cons to each

Not fair to criticize him??? Who do you think hired those guys?

I like Luke. We need a outside guy that makes it clear he has a system and will run his system. Of course major decisions fall on HC but no more Treadwell play or fade route on 4th and 1.

We couldn't run it up the middle because of talent/ coaching in what way would Luke give us the ability to run it up the middle now?

You can't criticize him for meddling when the system in place is for him to call the plays all along. He can't meddle what is his to call. You can debate the play calling system structure, but until that changes, that's the way it is. This hire will dictate whether the status quo stays in place with Freeze as the play caller, or if he hires a true OC that will handle play calling. We shall see

I just used Cumbie as an example. I'd love to have him, but he ain't cheap.

Personally I blame the RPO more so than Matt Luke for our OL problems.
