No I just had a momentary lapse in judgement. I didn't believe someone would actually try to ban Dixie. Then I remembered I go to Ole Miss... So glad it got shot down though

If they would have been in favor of getting rid of Dixie, I'm pretty sure all hell would break loose. With the way the boosters and fans are buying into the program/school again....it would be a nightmare to take away something like Dixie. Ole Miss would be taking 5 steps backwards.

We usually only play it like once a game anyway. We played it a bunch at LSU last year though.

I wouldnt have lost any sleep if they got rid of Dixie. Personally I dont wish I was in the land of cotton. I'd be picking it...
Personally though I think Dixie is a beautiful song. BUT if getting rid of the song because of the negative connotation that the song carries helps the school then I'm all for it. Just like I was for getting rid of confederate flags at games, and just like I didnt care that they got rid of Col. Reb. If you are a grown man losing sleep over such petty things then you have issues.

Some ASB douche, who I heard was from South Dakota, tried to get it banned. It never passed through even the athletics committee so it was never really a threat. But the fact that someone would bring this up proves that ASB is just a way for overzealous dbags to build their resume on "being able to change things at Ole Miss."
And I have a few friends in ASB but they are there to stop shite like this from happening, thankfully.

Ask any American what they think of when you say Dixie and 90% will say the South or Old South...

Dixie doesnt make Ole Miss. A beautiful campus, beautiful women, a gameday scene that is second to none, a great education, a rising athletic department, and a student body that embodies America...its growing and changing in a good way.
To the guy that says I am what's wrong with Ole Miss you got it all wrong. As a black male in particular I find myself having to defend the University I love whenever its brought up. Why do you like that racist school? ...it's not racist just like America it has a past that it isnt proud of but has done things to move forward. You didnt see the Obama riots? ...that wasnt a riot just a couple idiots and since its MS the story was blown out of porportion by the media.
As a black male how do I honestly defend Ole Miss if there is a public heated debate about saving Dixie, a song that starts off with I wish I was in the land of Cotton???
Personally I dont care if there is a Klan rally before each game, I dont get over emotional about simple things. But if someone does try to change a few things in order to appeal to a large base than just Ole Miss I'm all for it. You should be as well.

Everything you said is true, but I ask you this.. Why do you or anyone else give a damn about what others say about it? We still pull in a very large percentage of out of state students every year. We have the highest minority enrollment in the SEC. So apparently it's not hurting our enrollment (there is already too few spots for people that want to get in).
I just think this is all apart of trying to appease everyone and be as politically correct as possible. Personally I don't believe in political correctness in any shape or form.

Nothing about this lyric is or should be controversial.. Mississippi was and still is "the land of cotton".
As far as the rest of the song, people can read into it what they want. If you want something to be controversial it will be. To me it has nothing to do with racism or slavery, but points out that the south is rich with family and cultural traditions.

I can see and agree with just about all that you stated. However they way you see the song Dixie most of the rest of the country doesnt. I live in Texas and brought up the topic with some of the people in the room and they all stated Dixie made them think of Bryant's Minstrels (or some black guys with painted big lips dancing)
As I stated personally it doesnt bother me. To answer your question the reason I care about political correctness is that when Ole Miss is on top of the sporting world, I dont want the conversaiton to be about Dixie, Confederate flag, or Col Reb. I want the conversation to be about a great university that is on the rise.
We also wore the grey jerseys last year in the Bama game.
If a practice was going on at your job that was highly offensive to your religious denomination(assuming you have one)would it not be the place of your business to address it? Or should they just listen to the mass or the others who dont want to change the tradition? I do agree there has to be a point where enough is enough. We disagree, but I just dont think removing Dixie would be that point.
