Yeah when you start getting around 60 hours, it sucks. I did it in my 20s when I worked for a group home, but I try to avoid it at all costs now if possible.

I think he's saying he would get bumped to $60-70K which means he's sitting around ~$45K now. If you're training for a specialized skill, could you possibly work for yourself one day. If so, I would take it, especially if you're single and have plenty of time on your hands.

And what the frick does this land get you?

Shitty post and shitty advice. Put in your 40 and enjoy your life unless your current job security is limited

Just not sure what it does for you. And others in this thread seem to agree. I would happily learn what you mean though

Seems like you are the one that overreached my friend

In my current job I only work 40 hours a week if that. I have great benefits such as 14 holidays and over a months vacation.

If I were to leave, my hours would be 50-60 hours a week plus some weekends and maybe like 2 weeks vacation to start off.

IMHO, this doesn't appear to be that great a deal. Here's why...

1. Lose two weeks vacation and that would be like giving up a few grand at your salary.

2. Hours increased... depends on how they come. 50 hours at 5x10 is not that bad. 50 hours at 5x8 and two full weekends a month really sucks. 60 is even worse. You might not be there now, especially if you don't have kids, but your time away from work will become more and more valuable as you get older.

3. Is money the ONLY reason you are thinking about making a move? Because that is rarely the only reason. What about advancement and opportunity to move up? Are the other monetary benefits any better (bonus, 401k & match, insurance costs, etc etc)? What about the personality of your boss, is he a great guy and does he treat you well? Is this a new position that has been created? If not, what happened to the previous guy and why did he leave?

4. What is the structure of the company? Public, government, private, etc? I highly discourage people to move from public companies to private companies unless there are very compelling reasons, and only if the private companies are sufficiently large that the owner is not involved on a daily basis (i.e., he/she has hired professionals to run it like a professional company). What is the corporate environment like? Would you rather wear a suit and tie and work for IBM, or jeans and a t-shirt and work for Ben and Jerry's? What is the projected stability and outlook for the two companies involved? If you have to move to make a big promotion, what are their other locations?

5. Personal interactions - Are you married? What is your wife's opinion about you being gone for more hours per week and losing weekends? Do you NEED the money for a specific reason other than just wanting to make more? Are you thinking about kids in the near future? Is the insurance coverage comparable including deductions, costs, health savings accounts, etc?

6. Would you be better off with an alternate investment of your time? I.e., could you start a part time business? Work on real estate? Etc.

And so forth. All considerations to make. Based on the hours and lost benefits, I'd be hesitant to make this move even with the extra pay, unless you can come up with some other compelling reasons to change. And there may well be several that make sense. That month of vacation you are currently getting is huge. JMHO.

50 and 60 is a big jump. That's 2 hours more a day just with the 10 hour jump... That's 4 more from where you were. 8 hour shifts to 12 hour shifts
