So we are suppose to close on our house next Thursday. We signed a contract saying we would close no later than midnight on Thursday. The closing office we are assigned to said the latest we can come in and close is 4pm..

My wife (god bless her) realized that she has jury duty next week that she was assigned back in january.. I really have no idea how the jury duty process goes about. They just told her it would be mon-fri and to not make any plans...

So am I fricked? These people were specific about closing on this date for some reason and its truthfully the only reason they are selling to us over another buyer.

Screw the jury duty. Take care of the house.

Have her grant you temporary power of attorney.

I did that the last time I closed on a house because I had to make a trip to Boston after we'd already scheduled the closing.

Just have her go in and tell the judge and lawyers she is racist. She'll be out of there by lunch on day one.

I have 20+ years in the mortgage industry.

Who assigned the closing agent? You do have the right to choose a different closing agent, no matter what they are telling you. They will accommodate an after 4 Closing, they're a service provider and rely on referrals. Ask your lender to help you find a different closing agent.

Have them print out the closing package and take it to her to sign on her break, there will be a notary somewhere in the building.

We do mail away closings all the time for our out of town clients.

Also, there should be a clause in the purchase agreement that specifies about jury duty. You will be fine and they will accommodate.

Lawyer friend told me many years ago how to get out of jury duty. When the judge is through discussing the potential cases to the jury pool all you have to do is when the judge ask if anyone has any questions simply raise your hand and ask a question. One or more of the attorneys either the prosecutor or defender will immediately scratch your name off the list.

Call the courthouse and ask to be relieved of jury duty. They will just put her name on the next list for a jury.

has she actually been picked for a jury or does she just have a summons at this point? My wife has a summons to be there tomorrow, but that doesn't mean she will be picked/selected for jury duty.

But do it only once, not three times.

If one never wants to have jury duty again in their lifetime simply pass out a few jury nullification pamphlets to other potential jurors and they will never call for you again, ever.
