Will do. The history of a lot of Appalachia is fascinating, imo.

I've always thought it was pretty cool.

Yeaaaaa, people are happy where I'm from. But the song Happy makes me unhappy... That song is garbage.

If CatFan81 is a shining example of the state, this wouldn't be surprising.
Yes, I realize she lives in Georgia.

Must've polled UofL Basketball fans. The rest of us have been enjoying the last few years here.
In all seriousness, the article is a bit contradictory. It makes the comment about most of the unhappy cities are in decline. Louisville is probably in the best shape it's been in since I've lived here.

Scranton became depressed when Dunder-Mifflin shut down

I'm not even from Kentucky.

I went to school there.
Is there really such a thing as a bandwagon UK football fan?

I have a hard time lately with picking up on stiff like that. I think I need a vacation.

If you lived as close to Illinois, Indiana and Ohio as we do then you'd be unhappy, too.

And on drugs in Eastern Kentucky. The loss of coal jobs and the lack of major roads cutting through the area really put this part of the state at a huge disadvantage.
Also, many of the small communities are controlled by a few people, who also buy the elections, and own most of the businesses in their towns.
Few jobs plus drugs and a culture of despression will never allow Eastern Kentucky to change.
The comment about Democrats controlling the state for 100 years is true as well.

The main reason is that the epa and atf have practically destroyed the coal and tobacco industries in the state, the two largest empoyers. This has caused a deep economic depression. This would be akin to Louisiana losing all of it's oil and gas industry (upstream, midstream, and downstream) plus the sugarcane industry. It would be a huge depression that the state may never recover from without huge changes from regulatory agencies in washington

Listen girl -- you gotta get it together. You gotta pick up on stiff like that! I mean, wood is wood! No wonder KY is unhappy!

Eastern KY is still its own world and long past the early 1900's
In my lifetime
*** "he needed killin" was still a sound legal defense in court
*** Guy got rolled up in his mattress in prison and set on fire. Death was ruled a suicide. Guy got sent up in the first place for killing a (name redacted) from (County name redacted)
*** The bar scene from "A Bronx Tale" where the locals beat up a motorcycle actually happened in Eastern KY town
*** The unofficial motto of the Hazard Country Club was "shootings start after 9pm"
*** Shooting a man in cold blood if caught sleeping with your daughter was a valid legal defense
*** Meyer Lanskey era mob would never set foot in KY after a run in with the "mountain mafia" in the prohibition era. On a side note, Hot Springs, AR was a "safe" mob town back then as well.
