I doubt any analogy would satisfy you. Suffice it to say that, because guns are available to those who would use them to do harm, it's logical to have as many defenses against them as possible.
Because crazy people don't often respond to the deterrents that sane people would, and because there is a strong societal aversion to institutionalizing them, it's important to at least minimize the effects of their rampages. While crude and a last resort measure, bullets can do that.
Or perhaps you can suggest another option that can actually be implemented.

No, I'm a pragmatist. I realize people who carry guns have a fantasy of taking down a shooter in public and being a hero.
In reality, that scenario is extremely rare, and adding more guns to a situation doesn't actually make anyone safer. It just increases your chance of getting shot.

You're an idiot. I don't want to shoot anyone but I carry because I don't want my life or my families' cut short because of some disturbed person. Carrying gives me and my family a fighting chance of surviving one of these atrocities.
