I know some French from college and I did my best, but once that ran out they didn't even attempt to communicate anymore.

I speak limited French. I've been from the English Channel to the Mediterranean and really had no problem there. Guess it's just who you encounter. You must have had some bad luck.

Unlike the Italians, where I knew NONE of the language and they still went out of their way to make us feel at home. Loved it. Would move there.

Italy is next on my list of places to visit. Venice, Rome, Tuscany.

I know I could live in France... and would love to sometime in the future. I'm fairly certain that I could live in most western European countries and be perfectly happy though.

Oh, I used to be much worse. The boyfriend is a southerner. He gets extremely embarrassed when I loudly voice my opinion on things that seem inappropriate to him, so over the years I've kind of toned it down... a lot.

Damn straight. I even leave the room and let him watch his Game of Thrones crap instead of bitching about it and making him change the channel.

Florence/Tuscany were amazing. The wine will get you fuuuucked up quick and I'll be honest here...the lasagna gave me a semi.

Dubai was fun and superficial while Abu Dhabi definitely felt like they weren't trying to achieve a facade. If Dubai is Las Vegas Abu Dhabi is more like a Houston. I was a political guest of Abu Dhabi so really didn't get a chance to get a truly good feel. Hard to get a read on a place when you have armed guards and on a schedule.

That's pretty interesting.

I came to the same conclusion, without armed guards.

Our Father Zayed took very good care of us. We were there during Christmas a few years ago, they outlaw any public display of Christianity, but Santa Claus was allowed, and was everywhere. The Emirates love Santa Claus. No joke.

Same here. I was watching an episode of season 4 and the wife was like, "Why haven't I watched this?" and I got super excited. We started it from the beginning and she loves it .

We just watched The Red Wedding. I felt horrible for not warning her, but seeing her reaction was amazing.

Red wedding caught us both off guard. We didn't even react until the credits rolled.

Then we're both like ".....what the frick?!"

I've seen most of it. Most of it is boring. The US really isn't that interesting. It's a fairly new country with little history compared to the rest of the world.
