Deer and hogs. Shoot at least two of each every year and fed me through the school year. All I needed was a freezer. I'd get Kroger brand canned veggies to go with it and I was set.

79 cent gizzard box from Zesto. Washed down with a banana orange shake if it was pay day.

Ramen, but not with the gross packets they include with it. I would microwave the noodles, drain the water, then add some pasta sauce, a little cheese, some hot sauce, and maybe some sliced ham or something. Came out to be a tasty meal that all total cost about $0.30 a serving. Loved it so much I still would eat that quite often over the next 5-6 years as an adult, only instead of making a double portion like in college I would just do a single portion and eat it as a side with a sandwich. Nice filling meal for like $1.

Interesting, might have to give that recipe to my son (he's a junior at AU). His go to with ramen is cook it as directed then add a tablespoon or two of peanut butter, he swears it tastes like Pad Thai.

I'd eat pretty good for a couple weeks each month, then I'd dig into the two large storage boxes that I brought from home.
They were filled with the common stuff everyone is listing...ramen, mac and cheese, pop corn, caned soups and stews, dried meats, etc.

When I was first at Auburn (mid 90s) it was either Brand X Pizza's wings and things (medium pizza and a dozen wings) or else it was Castleberry's canned stews/bbq.

My roommates and I would go to the Tyson family store on Fridays since it was open to the public and by a lot of chicken.

15 bean soup and rice $2 was at least 3 meals. For a treat we added sausage.

Ramen
Tostinos pizza
Zatarains jumbalaya mix (leftovers ftw)
Delivery pizza
Dollar menu McDonald
Cheap Taco Bell
Sneak food at work. I was a waiter and we had soups and mashed potatoes always available. And if something got fricked up and couldn't be sent to the table, I was on it like white on rice.

ETA I also ate tons of tuna and tilapia as I got older and healthier in college. I'd eat tuna straight out of the can multiple times a day

I bought a lot of deli meat and cheese and made sandwiches. Cheap as shite and it was a little fresher tasting than cheap pizzas or frozen mac and cheese. You can get a pound of ham, cheese and some rolls for like $20 total and that makes a lot of meals

I still get cold cuts at the deli and use them for lunches even though I don't have to. Something I could and have been eating all the time and will never get sick of

Grilled cheese
Hot dogs on white bread

One thing that seemed like a good deal at the time was Pizza Mia's from Pizza Hut. 3 for $15, so 6 meals for $15.

another go-to was Homestyle Bakes.

This box costs $4 and you could easily get 2 meals out of it, maaaaaybe 3 if you stretched it. Unlike Hamburger Helper you didn't need ground beef as well, everything you need was already in the box. Pretty good value.

And of course, fish sticks were popular as well.
