Nashville is underrated IMO. You have the cumberland River and it is surrounded by two different lakes.
Nashville is the state gem IMO. One of the best cities in the South bar none. Amazing how it's exploded the last 20 years

Knoxville is a hard city to get a feel for if you don't live in it.
You have Downtown/Campus/Old City/North Knox/South Knox and East Knox up to Strawberry plains area all somewhat geographically close together and account for the close to 200k that live inside the city limits of Knoxville and some that live in the county.
This is the area that most people see when they travel to Knoxville when coming up for games. It's older, a little bit more gritty like Robert said but has a lot of character. But it only paints half of the picture IMO. A lot of the areas are under going major face lifts and being revitalized over the last few years and moving forward fwiw.
Then you have this huge area west of downtown called West Knoxville. Geographically speaking, it accounts for an area quite a bit larger than the the areas mentioned above. Most of it isn't considered inside city limits but accounts for another 200-250k people.
West Knoxville/ West Knox County is probably seen as more progressive in terms of shopping, dining, education, neighborhoods and standard of living. More of the suburbs if you wanted to call it that. Areas like Farragut, Hardin Valley, Karns, Bearden, etc. But it's also the part of the city most visitors drive through on their way to downtown or to the mountains and consequently never get to experience things like the Million dollar neighborhoods going up and over the ridges along the river with the mountains in the back drop or the huge Shopping/Dinning/Business development called Turkey Creek out in West Knox County along with a lot of other good shopping on that side of town.
It's a great city regardless of where you go, but different parts have a different feel unique to that section of town. Similar to any other mid sized city in the country. Either way, if you're east of the MS river it's hard to beat the scenery/wildlife in East TN/West NC

Why is knoxville a shithole?
I always figured it was a nice place. Never been.

I love the state of Tennessee and its people. At least the many I've met from there. Football season makes it a bit interesting sometimes, but that's just in fun.

No ocean, too cold, and mountains. Nashville is nice though and I have good childhood memories of Chattanooga.

Interesting state displaying a lot of different cultures. I grew up in the memphis area and think it really belongs in mississippi.
Nashville is probably the best city in the south. East Tennessee is great for outdoor activities. The state sucks at football.

And the whole no state income tax thing is nice (though I know Texas and Florida and a few others don't have one either).
