If you know 3 languages you're trilingual
If you know 2 languages you're bilingual
If you know 1 language you're American.

That America is not a small country surrounded by other small countries that speak different languages.

Funny how Europeans are all about speaking multiple languages, that is until you come to their country and try to speak English.

Spoken like a true 'neck. There's nothing wrong with wanting to learn other languages. It's a good thing.

Exactly.

If every state in the US spoke a different language, multilingualism would be par for the course here, too.

Not saying that Americans shouldn't try to learn other languages (I can speak a little Spanish and Greek, just not fluently, unfortunately), but when you take the geographic proximity of European nations and juxtapose it with the relatively isolated USA, the language thing makes a lot more sense.

English is the international language. It's required for all international air travel and is almost universal in commerce, as your example shows.

Why? America. Not Britain.

It means I didn't have to learn a second language to talk my way out of an awkward encounter in Paris

It's also the international language required for the bridge of commercial shipping. English runs the world.

it tells me there is no need for us to know other languages. if each state spoke their own language, like europe, then it would be very common for people here to understand more than one

I think they may be giving Americans more credit than we deserve. Most of us are still having trouble with the one language.

Debatable. The sheer size of the British Empire spread the English language all over the world, which I think made it easier for English to become such a dominant language. Obviously, America's impact was important as well.

That I wish I knew more languages. But we're at a disadvantage. There's never been a need in day to day life, like there is in Europe.
