If you think back 15 years before the whole "Super Walmart" thing, no Walmarts had delis or full scale food/grocery sections. Sure, you could pick up some Pop Tarts, but there wasn't a whole grocery side.

I'm guessing they haven't gone through the Super Walmart expansion there or don't have the real estate to expand to the Super Walmart concept if they wanted to.

Walmart has a hard time opening within NYC due to real estate constraints. That and they setup stores based on the areas needs. Deli's are not in high demand due to all the local stores but help with a nitch, such as home goods, dry goods, and such.

Walmart trying to fit in in some areas and not look like they are trying to run every mom and pop business out. Especially deli's in NY.

Walmart could give away free shite at their Delis and people would still go to the local ones.

Many NY Delicatessens are Jewish establishments. Walmart may not want to have to contend with the probable need to provide kosher foods.

Walmart can't compete with local delicatessens. Jewish or not, they're the best in the country.
