The deli at walmart is about the only reason to go there, the rotisserie chicken is pretty good.
What is the reason they don't have that here?

They have real delis in NY. They aren't settling for that discount junk.

I considered that reason, but have been in a few grocery stores here that have those sections, and they look exactly like walmart.

The family owned ones are better for sure, but if other grocery chains are doing it, I would think walmart would do the same.

Many NY Delicatessens are Jewish establishments. Walmart may not want to have to contend with the probable need to provide kosher foods.

I didn't consider that. I did wonder though if butchers and such have to be union here? If so, that could be a reason too.

Grocery store workers are often union. Kroger is union as example. Did these walmarts have grocery stores? The union angle really might be it because WM is definitely anti -union.

Uh oh. CatFan is about to tell us all how she thinks Wal-Mart is gross and she only shops at Kroger and Publix.

I didn't intend for this to be about shopping preferences, more about why walmart strayed from its normal business model. Usually they will sell anything that is legal for them to put in their store.

In some places they sell liquor because they can, if they can sell weed in Colorado, it will probably be on shelves soon.

I think the poster that mentioned kosher food had it right. They would pretty much need an entirely different deli just for kosher food because the kitchen where the food is prepared needs rabbinical supervision.

There is literally no food at Wal-Mart

I think it was answered right off the bat.

No sane New Yorker is getting his deli on at Wal-Mart.

It's Deli wonderland up there.
