I don't shop there, but don't hate them either.

The business model is built on being the cheapest. Cut those labor margins as tight as possible. It's one of the many reasons I'll spend a little more at a store that is better staffed
There's room to compete with WalMart for many reasons mentioned in this thread. Those with more disposable income will go to other places with more specialized goods or at least better service.

Then I hope you also do not shop Amazon, Target, Whole Foods, Kmart, Dillard's, Macys, or eat at McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell

The checkout lines are a PITA. I am looking forward to some smaller, Walgreens-sized stores which is what they are supposed to roll out. Walgreens get more of my grocery $ now than WM, strictly due to convenience.

I'll pay a little more at somewhere like Target if need be to avoid dealing with that.
If you're shopping at Target to avoid the trailer park, ghetto, and illegal immigrant crowd, then that's perfectly understandable but as it relates to product there's no difference between their merchandise and what you get from Wal-Mart. It is the same stuff from the same sources.

This I will never understand. I got stuck having to run into Walmart a few days before Christmas a couple of years ago. Had to be one of their busier days of the year and I counted 7 registers not open, while every checkout line was at least 5 or 6 customers deep. Made no sense.
Completely agree.
They're no more responsible for the demise of mom-and-pop than any other big box but in terms of general operations they made a big turn in the wrong direction a few years ago. When they first opened, I loved the place. They emphasized American made stuff and had signs posted at the checkouts that said 'If there are more than 3 people in line, we will open another register'. It was a great place to shop.
Now I'm pretty sure the policy is that if there are less than 3 in each line, they think they've got too many people on duty and somebody has to clock out and go home. I still shop there, but it is never a pleasant experience.
In my mind, I associate it with Sam Walton dying but it was a few years afterwards when they really turned for the worst.

Gotta run with the lowest labor costs possible. What you save in price you lose in the experience. It's why those who can afford to are shopping other places.

I actually did a price comparison between WM and Publix a few years ago on some of our regular purchases and Publix wasn't that much more expensive. The biggest difference was in meat, produce, and health & beuaty products. Bread, cereal, cheese, etc. were pretty close in price.

I think their stores suck for the reasons I listed - shitty employees, dirty stores, long lines to check out, etc.
Probably more related to the area your Walmart is located. We have no lines, clean stores and helpful employees (mostly Filipino)

Boo fricking hoo. It's called capitalism.

Hey...you missed the part about them starting a campaign to buy 1/4 trillion in new U.S. made goods.
Yeah. I'm old enough to remember their faux patriotic "Made In America" campaign in the early 80s.
That went by the boards once they realized they could pay Micronesian 8-year-old's nickles to make their shite.

Sam Walton was alive and in charge then. He was 'good folks'.

Good lord.
Is Sam Walton your granddad? Or are you loaded to the gills on Walmart stock?

Wal-Mart is fantastic. People who hate Wal-Mart tend to hate Wal-Mart consumers because they don't like their lifestyle or whatever.

I hate walmart because their stores suck and their employees suck.

Jesus this thread.
A lot of superior complex going around in this thread. "I possibly CANNOT go to Wal-mart. I can't be seen mingling with the poors and the common rabble."
I lived in a somewhat well to do area of Columbia, and there was a Wal-mart and a Target about a mile from each other. Everyone, both rich and poor, went to both interchangeably. We also had a Kroger and a Publix as well. I understand that some of y'alls local wal-marts might be in shitty areas, not all of the stores are bad. And don't act like you're above going to wal-mart. If you're on a budget, you'll make do with them.
