shhh... i'm trying to bait him into saying that the 2008 collapse was Bush's fault, when it's unarguably policies put in place by Clinton and kept by democratic law makers who rebuffed Bush when he said that we need to stop these lending practices. you're going to scare him away.

[ hushedtone] I'm sure he actually believes that too. Probably watches the Newsroom on HBO. [ / Hushedtone]

Meh, I'm more worried about global warming ripping through Texas, 10 people still missing.

Do the deniers have no shame?

You can't scare away someone who thinks the Iraq War greatly contributed to our economic downturn. It's hilarious to watch Keynesians argue against war spending, though. So it could be an entertaining side note to my otherwise dreary Monday.

don't be ignorant. I didn't blame the entire recession on Bush, only an idiot would do that. But I only have a bachelors and an advanced degree in the field we are discussing, so hey, what do I know?

For the record, I do watch The Newsroom. It is a great show. I also watch Game of Thrones. Neither affect my intelligence.

Economic and Policy Research

As I have said before. The housing bubble caused the recession. The Iraq War exacerbated it.

How far did you read your link?

Answer: not far enough.

Here's where I stopped:
quote:

As a result of the drain imposed by the war, interest rates are somewhat higher than they would otherwise be. Higher interest rates will discourage investment, which reduces employment and also means that the economy will be less productive in the future. The negative effects of spending on the war will get larger the longer the war continues.

(I was charitable and partially read a CEPR paper. Be grateful.)

Final sentence:
quote:

However, the war did not cause either the housing bubble, nor its collapse, and therefore cannot be blamed for the recession.

The housing bubble caused the recession. The Iraq War exacerbated it. How many times do I have to say it? The economy is not a simple cut and dry thing. It has millions of moving pieces. But if you don't believe that the Iraq War was a part of the severity of the recession, you are sticking your head in the sand.

I have to speak in generalities, because 99% wouldn't understand the specifics, or even the base principles.

Here's your original statement. Does that look like "the housing bubble caused the recession"? Because it doesn't to me.

And you can argue that the war has exacerbated the economic issue and I wouldn't be horribly opposed to that idea. But to what degree? Is it 5% worse? 10%? 50%?

Your original statement was asinine. Kudos for correcting it. But don't pretend you didn't say it.

It seems like common knowledge that the housing bubble caused the recession. I'd think the MSM had covered that enough. I used the term "perspective," because that is how you have to look at it.

You can't quantify a percentage. If each event happened in separate eras, they would have had completely different results. For comparison, what percentage of Barry Bonds home runs were caused by PED's? Impossible.

I did clarify it one post later.

You seem to want to discredit me in every conversation. I really don't appreciate it, especially when I put in years of study on the subject. I can't explain everything in its entirety because that would take pages upon pages. But if you have more credentials than I do, be my guest, educate me on how to explain things to tRant.

Your best bet is to quit flaunting your credentials and depend upon the strength of your ideas to speak for the credentials.

And I'm not trying to discredit you at every opportunity. I simply call you on dumb statements. If you don't like it, don't make dumb statements. My "discrediting" will cease immediately.

I'm sorry that low unemployment doesn't fit your "Obama is a Muslim who hates America" narrative.

Are you saying the government should force businesses to raise wages?

I do think CEO pay should be tied to a set multiplier of the average worker wage for a company minus its top 10% of workers. Like no CEO can be paid more than 200 times the average working wage.

That would fix the stagnation of wages overnight.

Who enforces this? The government?

PASS.
