I have to say that Francis is the very first Pope that I like. I hope that he's as humble and Christ-centered behind the scenes as he appears to be in public.

He reminds me of Mother Teresa because of his seeming dedication to people rather than the trappings of power.

All of my other objections to religion are intact, however.

He was also a "Hitler's Youth" as a child but I don't think he really had a choice.

What if I told you an old man who plays dress up and thinks he's the voice of God was coming to America? Well, he is, and people are losing their shite over this like it's the 2nd coming of Jesus himself. If his name wasn't "Pope" you'd not let your kids get close to him because you'd think he's off his fricking rocker.

I'm Catholic and I don't like the Pope or the idea of a Pope.

Then you're probably not really a Catholic. The Pope stuff comes with the belief set.

Follow up, do you believe the Eucharist is literally the body and blood of Christ or it is just figurative?

It's not alleged. You can trace the Bishop of Rome back to the 1st century.

The thing is, the Bishop of Rome wasn't understood to be the head of the Church until centuries later.

No, you can't. There were no pope-like individuals until much later. What you see today as the pope would be impossible to find in the 1st century church.

Uh huh, but there was a still a Bishop in Rome. It's sort of why I said "Bishop of Rome" instead of "Pope".

There were lots of bishops in Rome, Constantinople, Egypt. Only after the political alliances between church and state did a specific organizational structure began to arise.

Yeah, I know.

Christianity didn't become the official religion of the Romans until the late 4th century.

That was the old Pope, Benedict, aka Cardinal Ratzinger. The new pope is Francis, aka Cardinal Bergoglio. New Pope is the child of Italian immigrants in South America.

Jesus came and died on the cross for the sins of man and rose again on the third day so that we may have a direct line to God. I don't need to confess to some dude on thinks he is better than me when I can confess my sins directly to Jesus.

Islam is not hierarchical in the same way apostolic Christianity is.

I think a closer analogy (but still imperfect) would be the Dalai Lama.

or the Queen of the UK - who is Supreme Head of the Church of England.
