Then you're just ignorant or dumb. You can argue the claim that his authority comes from the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ, but you cannot argue the supreme authority he has over the largest Christian denomination on the planet.

I couldn't care much less about the pope, but at least this one seems like a cool guy. I would have a beer with him.

Okay. Well...you're wrong, but that's a discussion for another time.

he does indeed. I'd like to hear his take on some income statements he's made and see where he's coming from.

He's taken a big social justice view (not like America's SJWs, but the actual biblical view of justice,) and i'm curious as to how he frames going about that or trying to bring that change around. He borders on a socialistic view (not a bad thing when viewed in ones spiritual life, but bad when pushed from the government through taxation) but i've yet to hear him say "the government should be in the income inequality game", moreso it should come from the Body of Christ.

But he's an intelligent, educated man who actively tries to make the world a little less shitty. Kim Kardashian is famous because her mother married Bruce Jenner and because she filmed herself taking a BBC.

Just proved your ignorance!

Of course the Pope doesn't wield the political power he used in past times, but his spiritual leadership of 1 billion still presents immense power.

Then you don't know what a figurehead is.

Every pope has exercised their authority and influence to varying degrees. Pope John Paul II exercised his authority rather loosely, especially in the 80s, when he was Bishop of Rome. The Vatican was working very actively against the Soviet Union. This is why the Russians tried to assassinate him.

Compared to what it used to? No. But living in a large Catholic community, it absolutely still has power and influence. Especially given the progressive nature of this particular Pope.

I have it on good authority that the Pope doesn't even exist.

What if I told you an old man who plays dress up and thinks he's the voice of God was coming to America? Well, he is, and people are losing their shite over this like it's the 2nd coming of Jesus himself. If his name wasn't "Pope" you'd not let your kids get close to him because you'd think he's off his fricking rocker.

It's sad we still live in a world where muslims kill people for Allah, politicians stay devoted to Israel because of the Old Testament, and people think the Pope is anything more than a pretentious dude in a costume.

1. He doesn't think he's the voice of God.

2. He is the 266th pontiff in a line of succession that goes all the way back to the first century. And he's in charge of one billion Catholics around the world. That's kind of a big deal.

All of this

And I don't understand why the OP gives a shite. A papal visit to the US happens like once every 20 years.

Why do you care if it is a big news story?

This Pope believes that the Church exists to serve the people. Not the other way around. How refreshing.

Now, if our politicians would only adopt his mindset.....

Nah. Just a garden variety Socialist. There's plenty of those to go around. Calling out a head of state for that these days would be like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500
