I stopped watching the news altogether, I get all of my news from tRant and InfoWars.

ST, is right about the Main Stream Media.
Then think of all the local news stations that are provided by Fox, or one of these other big 6 companies. They own most of the radio as well and newspaper through affiliates. How many times have you been on different sites and read the same 'recap' of a baseball/football/basketball game?
If the media constantly shows a certain reality of the world, whether it is true or not, most people will probably believe it rather than not.
Then think of all the local news stations that are provided by Fox, or one of these other big 6 companies. They own most of the radio as well and newspaper through affiliates. How many times have you been on different sites and read the same 'recap' of a baseball/football/basketball game?

Seriously, how old are you?
Just a few decades ago, there were only THREE major sources for broadcast news so even taken at face value an increase to 6 is a doubling of sources.
But, and it is a massive but, virtually nobody is limited to three sources today. With the advent of the internet and the widespread proliferation of smart devices, high quality cameras, etc, we've got a truly unprecedented level of access to unfiltered information.
The MSM's ability to shape public opinion is indeed still strong, but it is far weaker than it has ever been in the past and will continue to weaken as long as the internet remains open - which is why many places in the world strictly regulate content available to their citizenry.

I remember reading some newspaper accounts of The Boston Massacre in an upper level history class. They were shameless in their "reporting" of what really happened.
The American media has been doing this since before there even was a USA.
